Arizona Chickens

Thank you so much again! I am so so excited. Everyone is in and everything seems to be going well. My humidity is kinda wonky though. What should it be at right now?

I keep it at 45 the first 18 days but if it dips below that it's no big deal. You have to be concerned with the lockdown days and up the humidity to 65. These Marans seem to have a thicker membrane and shell compared to my other breeds. They also hatch after all the others so don't give up on them. Make sure none have zipped before you open the incubator to avoid shrink wrapping any hatching chick. Once these Golden Cuckoos hatch they're very hardy. I have a few under one of my broody orp hens and she's been raising them outside, sleeping under one of my sage bushes at night. We had a couple nights where the temps dipped down to 20 and the chicks were fine under the orp.

go on amazon and enter immersion blender in the search field, everything from $15 up to $100. Mine is a cheap Oster, about $20.

The recipe is pretty simple. To make 2 cups mayo, I drop 2 eggs in a wide mouth quart jar, add 2 tbs lemon juice, 2 tbs prepared coarse mustard, and 2 cups of oil of your choice. Let it sit for a minute, then put the blender on the bottom of the jar and start 'er up. In about 15 seconds, it will start to get thick, then move the blender up and down a few times. Total elapsed time, about 30 seconds, and light years ahead of any store bought mayo.

Thank you!! I will be trying this very soon!
:hugs

....speaking of chickens,,,,,
...........I need some more of @Timskins Modesto Mills Layer feed pellets for my chickens!
I love using it as it's very versatile, I'm able to ferment it and I'm also able to dump it into my treadle feeder for when I need to take my vacations!
..The crumbles for the chicks are great too and a higher protein supplement if you want to mix it with the layer feed.
Hooray!!

:love

@sill and East Valley Chicken Folks

I am driving out there to pick up the Modesto Mills feed anyway so to those of you that need to buy some fresh chickens from @Timskins I'm happy to help bring some out for a few of us on the East Valley!
@desertmarcy feeds her birds this and they were all very nice looking and healthy Birds.

This is organic feed just FYI.

Sounds like winter time in Alaska when its cold. You get cabin fever and everything is funny. Sometimes just a funny face would send my kids and myself into fits of laughter for hours. Yep warmer weather is just around the corner!!!

I recd a Target gift card today and couldn't figure out what I wanted to get with it. After all the talk of home made mayo on here, I'm gonna get an immersion blender!!! Can't wait to try it out. P.S. those farm pix are making me so envious. Have started with a few chickens and now adding rabbits. Should have our first litter in a few days. Can't wait to get out of the city and onto some property where I can add a couple of goats, etc. My east coast family thinks I've gone mad.

I have an immersion blender that I got to use for making my own laundry detergent. I'm going to have to try to make my own mayonnaise. My husband's family thinks I'm nuts, but my family, they understand. I was raised with a garden, dogs, cats, and I even had rabbits. The look on my sister in laws face when she saw my baby chicks in my back room was priceless. She told me, I've seen some weird things in your back room, but that was the last thing I was expecting! HAHA

All of the kids in my family were hanging out playing with them, so she was curious what had them that excited. So basically, I'm used to people thinking I'm nuts, so I completely understand where you are coming from!

According to DH, Arrowroot stopped sitting on the remaining egg this afternoon, probably because the two chicks were running everywhere in the coop and not paying much attention to mama's calls to come back. She is now nesting with them in the corner of the coop near the people door, as far from the pop door to the pen as possible. I checked tonight, after getting home from work, and all were quiet, the other three Silkies were roosting, mama and chicks were in the corner, and the remaining egg had been rolled out of the floor nest. I removed it from the coop and will deal with it tomorrow.

I am off from work tomorrow and will be able to post photos.

I know how you feel. I kept my chicken babies in my office, resulting in multiple comments of, "They're in your house????" My response was, "Where did you keep your kids when they were babies? In your garage?"

In all seriousness though, it's a little sad to me that doing things "the old fashioned way" is now considered to be so aberrant. I'll take homegrown food over store-bought and shrink-wrapped in plastic any day.

Have fun making that mayonnaise! You won't believe how much better it tastes than store bought.

Who else on here has duck's? I just found Lauren out of the front yard, eating the wood ash from our fire pit. I noticed one of their poo's was dark purple, black. We had been giving them purple grapes as a treat.. But now I know why it is coming out the other end black.. I can't be to worried. No signs of illness.. But if anyone has any information let us know. I plan on posting on the duck Fourm as well..
