I started out with just normal chick starter. I haven't used layer until now. I am going to switch to organic soon but haven't yet.
I did do something to save money though. I started a fodder system which I will be switching them to over the next few weeks. I bought organic seed from azure standard. That plus a 20 dollar green house shelf from tractor supply. (They were on sale) so for less than 100 I have probably 3 months of feed. I'm 5 days in and i already have sprouted seeds.

OMG, Chicken Math got me tonight, big time!!!!
I won an auction here on BYC and have 24  Marans and some Olive Egger eggs arriving on Monday.
Holy cow, that's a lot of eggs.......hope ALL of them hatch.  LOL
DH is still shaking his head.
What fun!  Wish me luck.

I just have chickens for fun and eggs to share with the neighbors. These eggs that are coming are just for fun and to see if I can get a better hatch rate than the first time I tried. Majority of the chicks will be for sale, but I will probably pick a couple special ones to keep. Right now I have 8 girls and a variety. 4 Columbian Wyandottes, 1 Black Copper Marans, 1 splash Blue Laced Red Wyandotte, 1 blue Ameraucana, and 1 Barnevelder. I am impressed with the color and size of the Maran's eggs and she is a prolific layer and not yet a year old. So, I thought Marans would be a good choice for this hatch.

Watch out Maran can be addictive they are great birds. It would be about 8 months from now but if you find yourself in need of more Marans message me I will have some ready to sell by then.

I'm a little sad. My husband and I decided to give away my sweet, docile Buff Orpington rooster. He just started crowing regularly a few days ago. He's just over 4 months. I'm not allowed to have a crowing rooster in town so I will be finding him a home. We weren't comfortable with him wearing a no crow collar. Plus it hadn't worked that well on him. I put him in a dog crate in my back room to keep him a little quieter. He's sad and lonely. I feel horrible.

oh I am sorry you have to give up your roo. I would take him but I am not doing that breed. Hope you find a happy and safe home for him

I was asking $3.00 each. But what do you have?

o I have a pair of hatchery quality silkies , the roo has blue/slate legs with sparse foot feathering, white or yellow skin, a red comb and large wattles the hen has a very comb light gray skin and sparse foot feathering they are both buff colored with some black in the tail

Well, the inevitable finally happened. An egg leaked in my incubator. I had been noticing a yucky smell in the bathroom where the incubator is but didn't think to look IN the incubator for the source. Duh. Thought the bathtub drain trap had dried out again and the sewer smell was the cause of the odor. It happens a couple of times a year. Nope. This time it's the incubator.

The blasted egg dripped all over the turner, so I have to figure out how to keep 30+ eggs warm and more or less in position for however long it takes me to disassemble, scrub and sanitize the incubator then get it set up again. Going to be a long and stinky night.

Hope the other eggs are not contaminated. They weren't in direct contact with the yucky stuff.
