Arizona Chickens

Hi there - I'm pretty new to chicken ownership. Loving it so far and we're getting ready to build a run for our girls. We have quarter minus down in that area of the back yard but was wondering if that's the best thing to leave down or not. I was reading about sand but think it would get too hot here in the summer. I would love any suggestions from you guys for the best thing to keep flies away and to keep clean. I've read so much that I am overwhelmed with info and wanted to get a little more specific to our area! THANK YOU for any help!

And also we're in SE Chandler, anyone else down this way? I'm excited to meet other chicken owners around me!

Thought I'd post a pic or two of my new chicks that just showed up this morning from Pennsylvania! Buff Ameraucanas, Blue-Black-Splash Ameraucanas, and Rhode Island Red. Looking to improve my bloodlines on the last two, the Buff Ameraucanas are new for me.
so cute! what do you use to take their picture with? Are you using an SLR camera or you simply using your cell phone?

Thank you! :D  It's putting my construction skills to the test. I think moving 4x8 sheets of plywood and piles of 2x4s alone is hard enough for a big strong man. Doing it as a lone and not-quite-so-burly woman is even more challenging.

I can identify with the construction aspect of it all.  I tend to spend many hours on drawing/sketching ideas, doing many revisions.  Then, before I get cold feet, I buy a bunch of lumber, throw it out in the backyard and have at it...LOL!  Touch-And-Go all the way, adapting as I go.  My idea started off with a single 4x4 post and branched out like spokes of a wheel.  All the inner 2x6 base boards are for structural support only and will disappear when I go the deep litter route.

Enough about my run improvisations, but really like to know how many vines would you plant along one wall to get a decent coverage to eventually creep over the top of the run for partial coverage? --BB

I understand about revision and building something new, being a female I don't have quite the punch it takes for some things as the guys do; little by little I get things done. I'm proud of you @DesertChic
Bobby that's a good question as to grow much area one plant would cover!

:cd
FYI. ......I have the BYC seedbox for anybody that would like to have it for time, I just simply brought it up here and I don't really have time to enjoy and look through it right now with Mother's Day coming up. PM me if you're interested.

I do not have a photo-taking cell phone. Some of us are behind in technology (or don't want to pay for it)

I am using a digital Canon S2 IS camera.

Can you tell me what the black sex links are, as when I read about them I get different kinds of answers, as to what they are mixed with as far as their parentage. It seems to me there parentage can be just too different varieties of chickens, usually one of them being a barred rock. Do they usually have a extra large egg because of being bred of the two different breeds? I know that you have some for sale,.....so I'm just curious as I was thinking, boy I sure would like to have some of my hens lay bigger eggs!! Please tell me more! ;)

Good camera! :love

I use a Canon as well, which I truly enjoy and they're wonderful for taking crisp pictures, as long as I know how to use or in my case manipulate the smart computer inside the camera, lol.

... Bythe way I am enjoying my blue Amerucana chicks and the turkeys are getting a little bit more used to me handling them. Very pretty for baby toms! their dad was certainly quite impressive I'd say especially in person!

Black sex-links can be produced using any red male, such as Rhode Island Red, New Hampshire, Black Copper Marans works too; and a barred female, such as Barred Plymouth Rock or Cuckoo Marans. There is a thread on BYC somewhere with a listing of various combinations that make sexlinked chicks. I don't think the sexlinked breeding itself produces larger eggs but there is some hybrid vigor. The commercial hatchery sexlinked chicks have been bred for large eggs. I think you breed for larger eggs just like any other trait, just keep breeding the ones that lay the bigger eggs. It can backfire a little bit since sometimes the larger eggs are harder to hatch and sometimes have more double yolks which rarely hatch.

Remember I did not say those turkeys were toms for sure! It was just a guess.
