Arizona Chickens

Hello to everyone! I am in the Coolidge az area. I am raising several different types of chickens.I just now helped a silky chic hatch out. But I am concerned about some of the eggs.It has been 21 days since some of them were laid.No sign of any activity. The one that I helped hatch out is still in the incubator in a half shell.she is alive and since Friday has been chirping. It looks like she has poo in the bottom of the shell.should I help her out the rest of the way? I would like some advice.thanks!

We have had chicks hatch out like this with zero success.. I always "think" it might make it, then get attached or wonder what I did wrong.
However in the long run I think to myself, I should of just put it in the freezer.. It would of not had to suffer.. It had suffered the whole time, chirping
& the freezer is slow & painless for them... Just a thought..

Whew, just finished butchering and plucking 5 chickens and 2 adult turkeys. That took almost 3 hours from set up to clean up, but still haven't gutted them, they are chilling in ice water right now. Does anybody have a particular brand of turkey smoker they use or know of a friend that uses that you recommend? Thinking about getting one of those to vary the way we cook turkey.

Not sure if you have heard of the "EGG" no pun intended, really It is called "big green egg" I have heard they are awesome..

Just seeing that poor little chick breaks my heart.

yum! Yes I'd like to hear of a person/friend also, who uses a good turkey smoker too! Good job culling! I think it took me two hours for just 3 measly roosters with help of course, lol. Your doing great desertmarcy! ;):thumbsup

@Sill. & I got it down to about 8 minutes per bird, not quail... Once you have your method & each of you take one side of the bird it goes quick..
Now if there is a sick bird that has been suffering, we take more time with them to find the cause of their sickness.. Sometimes nothing :idunno

Someone on my turkey list mentioned that, she has one and likes it. I'm looking into it.

They are expensive. If we ever decide to get one, I would look for a use one.. Plus @Sill gave us 2 large metal drums, I think 50 gallon.. A friend is making a smoker for us out of that.. With wheels & all.. We would share it between our families.. So we will have to see how that comes out.. @ first we were going to make our own charcoal with it.. But then our friends figured they could build one.. always something..

I just killed and processed my first chicken today...a NN cockerel named Screech. In the end he weighed a solid 3.5 lbs @ 16 weeks. R.I.P. Screech, and thanks for supplying the main course for dinner.
I like that name?. It gets easier.. It's funny when we have parties with friend's.. They ask.. "is this your chicken's?" HUH, even if it was I would not say anything.. Even our kid's or D.H.!! They get weird.. It is weird now a day's.. But in our parents or grand parents time that was normal... We had that one really large hatch from our fertile egg's.. We ended up with like 14 roosters.. Some found home's.. But others gave them back to us.. & Yes, we made Coq au vin.. It was acctaully delish.. Now, they, the old owners could not bear the thought of knowing.. But in reality, if you put them on Craig's list.. They could go down a horrible violent death.. & then just tossed into the garbage.. & I have heard of these rooster sanctuaries, but has anyone ever seen one?? Plus, if there is such a thing, I am sure they live the rest of their lives out in a tiny cage.. They can't roam the pastures with out fighting with eachother.. That is what they do when their comb's & waddles are bright red.. They all think they are the boss.. the boss of what!? Right.. Well they will fight untill one gives up.. There are not enough hen's for them all at a sanctuary.. Unless they are using only certain " exceptional quality" roosters, so anyho, we like to eat chicken, our dog's like to eat chicken, our cat's love's to eat chicken.. Caned chicken!! & preditors love chciken for dinner.. it get's easier.. :frow

The littles went out for their first adventure day. They had a blast. They have a couple more weeks until they go to the coop full time but I was out working on their run extension so I penned them up and let them explore. I was super paranoid the whole time, looking over my shoulder. I had tons of blankets and plastic mesh covering the top of their little fort but I think it's going to take a lot of little baby steps for me to feel comfortable again. As for the run extension..... it looks like a 4 year old built it LOL. I did such a sloppy job measuring and the new end of the roof is way taller than the old one, It looks a mess but once the wire goes up and the shade cloth gets tied across hopefully it won't look as terrible. It's sturdy and once the wire goes on will be nice and secure but man it aint pretty. I have suspicions that at least one of my newbies could be a rooster... but don't I always. :p Gonna keep my eye on the Olive Egger. It's legs are soooo thick.
Agh, so adorable... Your chickens dot care what it look's like.. They will be happy there wth you.. & spoiled too.. :woot

Hi,
Yesterday I got 8 chicks (4 black copper Marans, 2 splash marans, and 1 black ameraucana), last night they all looked fine so I just put the heat lamp on them, and let them be. But then I went to go check on them this morning, and one of the black copper marans was laying down on its side with a wing, and a leg in the air. But it was still chirping. So, I took it in and gave it some sugar water. What else should I do?

Sounds like it could be sick? :idunno
The others could have tried to attach it.. They instinctively know when one is sick.. I would remove it, like you said fluid.. & keep an eye on it.. Put it back in & watch to see if they go after it again.. Then you would know... Take photos.. Check to make sure it can stand on it's own.. Keep us posted
