Arizona Chickens

Well, my Dorking project isn't going quite as I'd expected. I ordered hatching eggs from two separate Silver Gray Dorking (SGD) breeders, one from eBay and one from here on the BYC. The eBay eggs had an awesome 90% hatch rate....but several of the birds have rose combs and white or colored feathers, suggesting they're not pure SGDs. The BYC breeder did a HORRIBLE job packaging the eggs and and several were broken and oozed out over the remaining eggs. Only one of those eggs developed through ten days of incubation with all but four of them failing to even show signs of having been fertilized. So disappointing! So I've got only one SGD hatching from that group.

Here are photos of my first SGD hatch. They're pretty birds...but I've got a lot of work ahead of me.

They are adorable! I've gotten into salmon faverolles. I had really good luck from an ebayer. He packed the eggs in chipped up foam. Like woodchips ... but foam. Out of 13, two were clear and one stopped. I had a few chick deaths because of a respiratory thing and probably just attrition, but I have two pullets that I love. I got 11 (9 girls, 2 boys) from McMurray. I've got a few nice hens, although their wheaten coloring is slightly darker, and one cockerel I really like. I read that Faverolles are from Dorking stock.

I would like a Dorking, perhaps just so I could say it. It would be even better if I could find a Scots Dumpy and say "I have Dorkings and Dumpies."

I am in Tucson, AZ and I have a couple freebie Salmon Faverolle juvies that look like they will be a little smaller than SOP. One is definitely a cockerel. The other could go either way. Please let me know if you are interested.

your sure a lot closer to Yucca Arizona than I!

How are the shoe covers working for your chicken area? Were they very expensive? I'd like to have some for myself and when people come in my chicken area. In the hospitals they had those and also for those of us doing home care back in Hawaii.
I drove past Yucca AZ today on my way to Ca to pick up some Jill Reese Cream Creasted Legbars will be going past it again on Sat afternoon

Well it was a good trip to Ca today expect that Southern Ca drivers are quite mad I am sure of that. They drive like they are the only ones on the road Yikes..... Any who I am here to visit family and to pick up some Cream Created Legbars Excited to get them and then to get back home. My hubby will be picking up some Lavender Orphingtons due to arrive tomorrow from Nebraska. And, I dropped off a young 7 month old RI roo in CA he was very excited to meet his new girls.

Ditto on the welcome!

Our flock is having a hard time either finding the yellow toung to make the water come out or they are just lazy & expect me to give them fresh water everyday.. So we bought this

I use those for my quail. Domestic quail are known for being stupid but they learned these quickly. I just kept triggering the cup to fill and once the first bird got it the others caught on quickly.

I used a laser light cat toy to train my chicks and chickens to use the 5 gallon buckets with the water nipples on the bottom. Aim the light at the ground and they'll follow it all the way to the water nipple. Took my flock a couple minutes to learn with this method.

On another note, the doves around here have learned if 3 land on the treadle feeder it opens! They are going through my feed fast! I had one climb in and get stuck inside when I walked out, was tempted to leave it in there.
Those doves are what I call free dog food!

Oh, and the night is still young!

BTW the spicy mayo is delish! It tastes much better after a day or two. I've had to make a second batch because my kids love all things spicy. Thanks again for the recipe and the tip to use an immersion blender. That made it so quick to make and clean up afterwards.

You're welcome! Ready to see the babies?

The big ginger colored one to the left is a partridge Cochin, he is a bit of a bully, and the GF is already calling him Sumo. Ended up with 2 cochins, 1 Black Ameraucana, and 12 Black Jersey Giants.
