Arizona Chickens

Babies!  Make sure to post pics as they grow.

My mom sure learned the hard way about chickens and ear rings!  She was bent over "talking" to some of her chickens and one took her ear ring out and swallowed it.  A week later it happened again.  I guess my mom is a slow learner but now she doesn't let them get too close to her ears.  She never did recover the lost jewelry. :(

I know the feeling! My pullet, Pippen, leaped up onto my lap, snatched one of my favorite pearl earrings out of my ear, hopped back down and swallowed it before I could react. I was devastated and whimpered about it for days. They were a gift from my son during a particularly difficult time, and I wore those earrings almost constantly. I've been told I may find the earring in her gizzard once she reaches butchering age, but given that it's a pearl, I'm not holding out much hope of finding anything other than the post it was mounted to.

Awwww! ~hugs!

That's too bad! I bet the entire ear ring will be gone by then, the gizzard is a very strong organ.

Hear ye hear ye!
....Announcing a Mesa feed coop that orders Modesto Mills feed!!

This is not a mash or powdered feed, but an Organic pellet feed for the layers Which is corn and soy free. The chick starter Is also organic & corn and soy free and is in crumbles. Each comes in a 50 pound bag and the estimated price should be close to 30 dollars. This should Give everyone an extra 10 pounds for what they're already currently paying for 40# and possibly a $2.00 to $4.00 savings from their current feed if they're buying organic. Their layer and chick starter is a higher protein content than Big Sky organic feed. We will probably order minimum of Every 2 months. This will be based on the demand we have as a group.
*Please PM me for further information! :) Keep in mind this feed can be fermented and it does expand Quite a bit.

The Feed arrived yesterday and the pick up location is likely to be at Broadway and Extention.
Pick up times for the order will probably be Friday and Saturday. It will be cash only to start. The feed order times may correlate with the phxfeedcoops orders just fyi for the future!

Here is a link on the feed ingredients:

That's always a lot of fun to create your own barnyard mixes! :highfive:
I mixed my Black Copper Marans Rooster to my Easter Eggers and now I'm getting some Olive eggers with Rose combs and feathered feet, Lol :D
The white giant/Leghorn was an egg I took out of the fridge to fill up the incubator lol (it was one of my great grandpa's eggs) and the black silkie crosses mom is half silkie half easter egger and its dad is pure pet quality silkie lol

HELP!!!

I don't know how she got out. But one of my dogs got ahold on one of my girls. I'm heart broken! She's standing on both legs now and can move around after resting. They pulled out a bunch of her feathers and I'm sure her back end is going to be sore fore quite some time. My question is, is there anything I can do to help clean her up. Some of her butt feathers are barely attached. Do I just leave her be and left her do it? How long should I keep her separated from my other girls?

How fun..:goodpost:
Did they come in the mail?? I ask only cause I did not think they mailed here this time of year..
So happy that you can post up photo's. Can't wait to them get bigger..

Yes they came in the mail! We were worried too and had resigned ourselves to the thought of having one or two DOA. But they came early this morning from Minnesota after being there a whole day too! Nerve racking! Anyhow, all were peeping and excited to have some space! They were very tired and stressed. We got them water and electrolytes and some electrolyte gel that murrays sent with them. They all perked up and having been doing their chickly duties since then! They are all bedded down together and sleeping now... Here are some close ups... Sorry for the red hue I figure you all understand.

Keep her in a quiet room and keep her warm with access to water. You'll want to separate her from the others if you haven't done so already as they may pick on her. Offer her protein by way of scrambled eggs. Good luck.

How long to keep her separated depends upon how long it takes her to heal. You don't want any exposed wounds to attract attention from the other chickens so it's just safer to keep her isolated until feather regrowth conceals any raw spots. Also, incoming feathers are sometimes a temptation to other chickens. They'll pluck them right out before they have a chance to grow back. Not knowing the extent of the damage, I can tell you that regrowth can take 2-3 weeks, though this is by no means a hard and fast rule.
