Arizona Chickens

Been off line for some time ! Occasionally stop by but can never keep up with all posts. Also took a vacation. Despite having six hens who like to sit on eggs only the following two chicks have survived the neighborhood cat attacks through the chain link fence. Only rooster is FM/NN, This chick has a knack for misadventures. She needed to be saved from being smothered under a upturned water container and two days ago I found her hanging by one leg in the seam between two chainlink panels . Guess her name should be TROUBLE
Agh, how pretty. . So good to see you on again.. The showgirl we just posted is our first NN. :frow

@Cityfarm

Unfortunately, he is not that experienced. He is changing out the water a few times per day that they stand in to cool. They seem to like the misters, stand near them and get their backs wet. I'm just heartbroken that I'm not there to help them. I did have him FaceTime me so I could see their behavior- some panting but no more than normal. They looked just like they do when I'm there.

How are the rest of your bird's? ? if you want someone to know that you are quoting them or mentioning them. they will get a email alert that you mentioned them. It is a icon above by the photos sign.
Once you type in the user's name you might have other options of other users. Just tap on their name and it will go into a box then you hit submit. It should look like this @PhxBirds

OMG great photos. I used to think NN were freaky looking. I must have some now. Also, will you let Lady K know that some of us are still wishing her well on her travels. Hoping all is well.

@Sill dragged me into this adventure today. if you guys want some free water lettuce call James at 602 423 2973 he's on 19th Avenue and Thunderbird.
The duck's are going to have to eat their way to the water. Buckets are going to be so full they're not going to know what to do..

....Announcing a Mesa feed coop that orders Modesto Mills feed!!

This is not a mash or powdered feed, but an Organic pellet feed for the layers Which is corn and soy free. The chick starter Is also organic & corn and soy free and is in crumbles. Each comes in a 50 pound bag and the estimated price should be close to 30 dollars. This should Give everyone an extra 10 pounds for what they're already currently paying for 40# and possibly a $2.00 to $4.00 savings from their current feed if they're buying organic. Their layer and chick starter is a higher protein content than Big Sky organic feed. We will probably order minimum of Every 2 months. This will be based on the demand we have as a group.
*Please PM me for further information!

Keep in mind this feed can be fermented and it does expand Quite a bit.

The Feed arrived yesterday and the pick up location is likely to be at Broadway and Extention.
Pick up times for the order will probably be Friday and Saturday. It will be cash only to start. The feed order times may correlate with the phxfeedcoops orders just fyi for the future!

Here is a link on the feed ingredients:

Awesome! How do we order?

HELP!!!

I don't know how she got out. But one of my dogs got ahold on one of my girls. I'm heart broken! She's standing on both legs now and can move around after resting. They pulled out a bunch of her feathers and I'm sure her back end is going to be sore fore quite some time. My question is, is there anything I can do to help clean her up. Some of her butt feathers are barely attached. Do I just leave her be and left her do it? How long should I keep her separated from my other girls?
So sorry, I hope she recovers quickly.

Help! I'm losing full grown hens! Yesterday afternoon a EE hen that just started laying last week was found dead on the ground. No blood, no bites. This morning, a 8month old black austral hen dead on the ground under the roost just the same. I'm out of town and the room mate is taking care of them. Any ideas?? It shouldn't be the heat, they have misters and tons of fresh water and food. I told him to let the rest them out of the coop/run to peck around the back yard. Please help!!!
Oh no! I hope you don't have any more losses.

This time of year we also can get fowl pox which is spread my mosquitoes, and there usually are plenty of them from the monsoon rains. Typical dry pox shows as scab like spots on the comb and wattles, while wet pox shows up inside the mouth, and facial skin as wet lesions.

Here is our precious showgirl from @AZChiknGoddess

She is precious

James had an amazing pond set up and who knew water lettuce could grow so big here? Some of the individual plants were almost a foot across. My car was full and we hardly made a dent in the amount he had in that giant pond. If you have critters that will eat it it's worth picking up all you can carry home. My ducks, chickens, tortoises and tilapia will be getting all they can eat water lettuce for a while.
