Arizona Chickens

I just found my RIR hen dead on her back :'( I suspect it's old age(as she was a hand me down chicken that was probably 5-7 years old then and I've had her for 2 more, but should I be concerned about anything else that my other girls might have caught? The temperatures up here are very mild (low 80's today) It makes me so sad she is gone as she was one of the friendliest of the bunch that would come running when I called her and was head lady.

I don't think you have anything to be concerned about. .

This morning I was sitting on a porch swing and one of my EE was preening my hair. I looked up at here and bam, she pecked me right in my eye. Ouch it hurt, but fortunately it missed the pupil, although my eye is bloody looking. She is so sweet, so I know it wasn't really aggression.

Oh, wow.. bless your heart. . I don't think eyeballs look like food but you never know what a chicken thinks. Grape? Glad it was not the pupil. . I don't wear earrings or shiny shoes that are sparkly around them. They go for my buttons sometimes..

fun! Yes I hope the nice weather stays, I still haven't figured out what to do about my turkeys flying on my roof if I should trim one wing or not? Ideas anyone?

Does their pen have a roof or do they free range in your yard. A long time ago I saw a post with a picture of some ones yard with a spider web of lightweight steel. The purpose was a deterrent for hawks landing but it should also work for big birds trying to fly up on roofs. Is that some thing that could be installed in your yard ?

I do not know anything about wing clipping but have seen posts on BYC. Do a search for wing clipping here on BYC.

My turkeys free range and they roost up in the tree they are not in any kind of Cage or pen at this time.

Hi fellow Arizonian!

I want to start raising coturnix quail. I live in the east valley of Phoenix and would like to visit with people in the valley who raise these quail to get more specifics of the challenges . I have gone throuh the quail forum many times i have my pens made and an incubator ready to and just want some advice locally before i jump!

Thank you!

@Sill has the knowing & doing..
Those are her quail egg's she gave us.. we just happened to have the wild dove eggs that are in there around her jumbo quail egg's. At the very bottom a duck egg. The top eggs are from our hen's. Keep us all posted. .
