Well, mine are more active and healthy today, and no more have died. I wish I had started the course of antibiotics a few days sooner, probably would have saved the 4 that died this weekend.

Its rough having sick chickens! Condolences to those that have had some die. None of it is fun. The weather is so unusual with 90 plus degrees during the day and in the upper 50s at night its no wonder we have sick animals. The weather is ripe for all sorts of things to happen. The ground changes this time of year too - so you must watch for worm loads or at least be consistent with your apple cider vinegar and what ever else works for your area. Listen too.....you might catch a cough fast enough they won't pass on the crud they are trying to catch. Easy to say isn't it......I'm horrid remembering ACV since I change my pans so often but I'll keep trying to remember. I'll scrub down the coop sometime this week (my surgery is next week and I'll be down for a few months again!) and hopefully I'll remember to dust a bit too - proactive is what I call it!! Hang in there friends - no one ever said raising chickens/ducks/quail was for the faint of heart! Although everyone says the benefits are heavenly!

Here was my project for the weekend..building bookcases. Actually, I built these cases about a year and a half ago, just installed them in the new house this weekend....

@cyborg Nice bookcases! You just can't beat that gorgeous pine. I have a few boards stored in my woodshop for future projects and have a tendency to impulsively buy more whenever I see it.

I think you collect books like I do. I designed and built two large bookcases out of maple a couple years back, thinking they would help me organize my ever-growing home library with room to spare for future additions. Half an hour after installing them in our office the bookcases were over-flowing with books. Oops!



The photo doesn't do my project justice, but you get the idea. There's a fair amount of detail work along the bottom of the case but I didn't have enough room to stand back and get a good shot.

Yeah, now I need to get busy and make some more bookcases, still have about 10 milk crates full of books out in the shed. I have been watching for more of that borer damaged pine, but so far, no joy. I did get 3 bookcases and 1 set of window shutters out of the first batch of wood, have been holding off new case construction for lack of wood.
