Arizona Chickens

Hi everyone. I have a question about a crop issue. One of my Americans has always had a larger crop (she was born last April), but recently it has gotten the size of a large orange and it is bothering her. I felt it and it gurgles a little bit when very gently massaged and I can feel grit in there. She appears to be eating and has fresh water available every day. Any thoughts on what could be wrong and ways I can help her?

@Twinklin has had good success with a harness.. Maybe she will chime in.. :frow

If she hasn't had it long like only a week or so it sounds like she has sour crop which can be treated and perhaps not happen again. This article is helpful http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2012/04/answers-from-chicken-vet-on-impacted.html When my chicken would have it I would tilt my bird upside down and make her vomit until her crop was clear, isolate her, give her no food the rest of the day and then starting the next morning would only feed her crumbles and clean water until she was better. Unfortunately mine had a pendulous crop so the sour crop was very frequent which is what made me make the harness. I made a triangle out of denim that fit over her chest and them sewed on elastic straps that cross over her back. This held her crop up so food could pass through it properly. It worked for a year until I lost her to an unrelated cause. This is the basic design I used. The red lines indicate where the straps were sewn. I used elastic and pulled it over her wings but making it velcro would be a lot easier.

Thank you so much for the advice @Twinklin. I am going to try and make her vomit (I was reading and watching videos just now so hopefully I do it right) and then bring her inside for a day or two. I will have someone sew me the patch since I think it will be a reoccurring thing otherwise. Should it be pretty snug or allow for some outward expansion?

You're welcome. it should be snug. Just check the straps often to make sure they aren't rubbing or cutting into her over time. If it's too loose you risk her getting her legs caught in it and injuring herself.

I am very proud! One of my Barred Rock cockerels took Super Show Champion at the Safford, AZ show January 16! There were 22 Barred Rocks entered from 3 different breeders; 10 cockerels. I entered 6 cockerels and got first through fifth place. Then the #1 took Best American and went on to win the whole show! I have been working really hard on my Barred Rocks, so nice to be recognized! In addition to a cash award, they gave out beautiful plaques this year to the Show Champion winner and Reserve Show Champion winner. Here I am with my win and Show Superintendant James Smith, then another photo with my bird.
