Arizona Chickens

That'd be a short drive.

Half my neighborhood isn't developed & surrounded by hay fields & cow pastures plus the lot behind my yard & to the 3 to the right are empty. Might be worth a try to see if it'd lessen them. I found 1 of them in my coop 1 morning just hanging out like it was welcome.

I know they go somewhere cause 1 time I saw a Sonoran green toad...really pretty...during a rain & haven't seen it since. From what I understand pretty much all of the native toads here live underground until they're after food/mate or it rains.

She is a little more spunky, will fight me when I try to give her her antibiotic, but is still very weak, and has issues balancing on her left side. My dad read up, and the disease is called Botulism If she sirvives through the night, she has a higher hope pf living. She also, from what i've determined after close inspection, is probably a guy.....
If Dory survives this, "he"will earn a new name. Most likely Daruis.
I'm glad Dory is bit better. What makes you think a guy? I've my first polish that are 2months so I'm learning their traits. :)

Dory The Polish Illness Update -

Dory is now officially the most spoiled and well cared for bird in the coop. She has what we have identified as Chicken Botulism, caused by the constantly wet and rapidly warm changing weather, and a bought of moldy chick crumble.

Her condition is stationary at the moment, not getting worse, but not seeming to get any better. She is making noise, but can barely stand on her own, and is very unbalanced, falling over on her left side with a muffled wing flap and awkward cheep. I have to fill a syringe with water and feed it down her throat every 45 minutes, and literally place individual grains of crumble into her beak, so she can swallow them.

We have her drinking Save-a-chick Probiotics and Electrolytes, 400ui Vitamin E gel once a day, baby food, yogurt, and molasses mixture for sustenance and internal cleansing, and back to medicated chick starter. She sleeps all day, accept for when being handled, and can barely stay awake long enough to swallow then. She still has muscle control, and will try to stand on her own. She fights a bit when I try to water her or feed her, but she eventually accepts that i'm trying to help.

Is there anything I can be doing/don't need to be doing for her?

She is getting lots of water, and even pooped a solid thismorning after eating some strawberries and boiled egg yesterday.

Im gpoiong to try to get her to eat more boiled egg tonight, or even some scrambled. (We may end up sharing)

Also, Dory , if "she" survives this illness, will most likely be earning a new name, as after having held "her" close for the past few days, I have noticed some "he-ish" signs. Thats right, Dory may be a guy. So yes. "Dory" will be "Darius".

Thats about it for today. Trying to keep my hopes up. Prayers for dory, and a Happy4 of july!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On the bright side, we have made some amazing Fruit Pizzas, and witnessed on the way to walmart, the Colossal Cave Road 4th of July parade. Cute horses and boy scouts with thier balloon animal-hats.
Have some family coming over, and we will be setting off some fireworks. Will make sure the chickens aren't scared to death.
Will they become to stressed if we are lighting the kind that don't shoot off into the air?
(I know my dog hates them either way)
Quote: "She" has pointed feathers, "her" comb and crest are bigger and less round than a females is said to be, and "her" wings nearly drag on the ground they are so long. "She" also fights alot with the bigger chickens, trying to asset a high position before "she" is even fully living with them. (The little chickens only get to free range with the big girls, then go into their own spacious area after about an hour.)
Do you have pictures of your Polish babies yet? Im sure they are adoreable <3 My Dory is 4 months old at the moment.
I have pics of the baby babies..under a week, but the 2month olds only from the first day. Have to take an updated ones. I have 2 month old silver-laced with an all black crest and a 2 month old white crested black or really dark blue...I can see the blue tones and she had that tint as a baby. I also have a full grown sultan bantam & 2month old sultan that could be either bantam or standard along with a crevecoeur that's 2months.
I'll post pics for you soon as I can get them to cooperate. lol...warning, my eldest sultan, marshmallow, is a dirty little thing right now she loves the dirt! You can imagine a white bird + dirt + a mister equals a hot mess for looks.
For the baby babies I have 4 buffs, a gold-laced, 2 white crested blue, & 3 white crested blacks for polish and another crevecoeur. So cute. Along with 13 feather footed bantams that all appear to be cochins in various colors. Not keeping all..just couldn't decide so ordered a variety.
I feel you on dirty white birds! my white non bearded silkie bantam hen is such a dirty little thing, you can hardly tell she is white. Not to mention, she just got over vent prolapse, so she isn't able to have a bath until her vent scabbing has fully healed.
a PIC of her before prolapse hit. She is still a dirty bird XD loves to dust bathe.
She's cute!!!!! I want at least one silkie...just haven't lucked out on the assortment I got or found one when the bantams where at the feed store. I think there were some, but another person snagged. I'll find the right one when it's time...til then it's fun trying!
OK...here are some pics. Not the best as they aren't wanting to give a pretty face lol.
Marshmallow, bantam sultam...female, feather pointed due to mister going
Sapphire, crevecoeur
Mo, white crested black (blue tint/bluish as baby)...crest isn't generally so pointed the mister's going...the wattles make me wonder if I've another boy--no crow/loud vocal yet that I've heard
Mo with Ducky (boy I think) my white cochin in front of Minnie or Frankie 2 of the Americaunas, Freddie the oegb, Copper & I think Pearl's tail end on the right
Pearl, silver-laced...didn't think they had a black crest...so she's got me stumped. No wattles like Mo is showing...the others are my oegb's Freddie, Copper Penny, & just barely Silver Nickel (all boys!)
Pearl with my bun Maggie Mae on the ground, Mouse is the white under the table and I think Freddie & maybe Copper.
Mouse (fluff), sultam possibly bantam (was mixed bin of bantam & crested)...so far all signs point to girl. Looks like Minnie in the background, Americauna
Mo, Pearl, & Mouse
Marshmallow (by the hose), Mo, Mouse, & Pearl
That's my oegb copper penny next to Mouse, Mo, & Sapphire
Such a beautiful assortment of chooks <3
If they end up being roosters do you keep them?
My dad has recently established that if we get another rooster, we are keeping him this time for show. I've gotten rid of one of my favorites befor, it broke my heart, and a daddy can't see his baby girls heart torn into pieces XD So if Dory ends up being a Darius, we get to keep him. ^^
The rooster that is my Icon picture, that is the rooster I had to give away.
I already have a mille fleur d'uccle/cochin mix roo. I got the 2month old bunch in hopes of lots of girls to chill his assitude out!!! He goes to charge me at times...hits my legs & has broken skin/bruised so it's an ouch. He's awesome with the 3 older girls so that's been why he's here...that & he's gorgeous. I'm thinking I'll keep Penguion (black cochin) for certain & Freddie (oegb). Right now I think I've 5 boys...all 3 oegb & both cochin. Too many boys. Thankfully no issues as of now with fights,etc. I'll be posting the baby babies & boys for sale this week I think. Can't keep all the baby babies either.
That's a great Daddy! Handsome boy too. These are all hatchery chicks so not sure if any will be show quality or not. I know it's not likely, but there are the rare exceptions that do occur so I never rule it out. I haven't decided about showing. I'm thinking of breeding crevecoeur to help keep them going...especially if I end up with a boy & girl from these two I have.
