Arizona Chickens

Went to the Tucson show yesterday. Total fail on getting information for any sellers. No one had the NN, Brown Leghorn, etc. I didn't see NN in the show either. I don't think I missed them. I think there were a couple barred rocks. A lot of seramas. Quite a few d'uccle. Several cochin...large & bantam. The show next month I guess they're expecting about a 1,000 or more. I'm thinking of going to it as well. Again, I'll be grabbing any seller information that I can.

Of course, next Friday is my day to go to the State Fair again...for the critter sales!!!! Hopefully they won't be sold out. I'm going to have to be very good about the chickens. I'm debating about another bunny as I'm worried my girl is missing her sister (they escaped my yard & the 1 never came back). Buns are social & tend to bond to another bun. They will become depressed, etc. similar to other animals & humans. Any rate.....let me know if you'd like seller information for any breeds. I know the NN, Brown Leghorn, & I think barred rocks were requested. Either way...I'll grab all I can.
So you're looking for NN, Brown Leghorn and Barred Rocks at the Tucson Lawn show?

If you're looking for birds for sale the Tucson Show on November 19th will have tons of birds for sale. No one really breeds APA standard Naked Necks.

I'm working towards having NNs bred to APA standards. I'm maintaining 3 lines with my NNs, one focused on creating really good meat birds, one focusing on egg laying, and one line kept pure. What I've found so far is my pure line tends to run smaller than my NN-mixes, but I'm already seeing good other good traits coming out. And, amazingly, my pure NN hens/pullets are some of my best layers, giving me very large eggs in spite of their smaller sizes.

Quote: Lol we trailed each other at the show for bird pickup

I won 3 ribbons, got one disqualification , learned a buttload abut showmanship, and all around had a really good time.

It was totally rigged XD

just kidding, but it seemed that way because the superintendents kept winning, or people who know the superintendent. But I could assume that also means they are both skilled and experienced in the field because they hang around the shows alot more often.

Glad you made it to the show.
I was partial to the judging because my Black Java cockerel got best of breed out of 12 Black Javas entered, from 3 exhibitors.

My birds still have a long way to go, but it's nice to know I'm on the right track.

awesome that you were at the show too!!

I was the one with the three BL polish in a cage later on, and had a Wheaten serama, a GL and a SL wyandotte, and the smallest BR there.

lol my dad was so done by the end of the day.

been a rough day here at the school farm.

the meat ig nrok the chain holding the doors to both her cage and the pot-ballies cage, so the three pigs were wandering the yard, and decided they wanted to eat my entire days worth of protein/alfalfa/oat pellet mix, (for my three new polish to improve feather growth/condition for show) dump over the entire hutch structure, rip our the bars on the hutch, break a lid hinge, and tear the staples out of my homemade run ALL WHILE FREEING MY THREE EXTREMELY AGILE AND CRAFTY BIRDS INTO A 3 ACRE FENCED AREA FOR ME TO ATTEMPT TO CAPTURE BEFORE A HAWK ATE THEM.

and of course in the process I got STUNG by a bee, bit at least 4 times by the meat pig (who is twice the size of my 5' 3" 150 lb self.) and was worried sick about the prospect of my birds injuring themselves.

the stresssssssssssssssssss

i'm so done with the stupid pigs -_-

and we are, of course, getting NOTHER one soon.

so yay more stress.

I do believe I will be building a bigger coop for my birds in my free time at school, and putting it in an enclosed area that the stupid bacon-makers will not be able to destroy.

on that note, does anyone have any extra chicken wire laying around that is no bigger than 1" that maybe they would be willing to donate?

that's the part im stuck on right now, as I have plenty of pallets for the structure, but not enough of the right kind of wire that will both keep my birds safe and protected, but is sturdy or in a big enough shape.

lol and maybe i'll go to the washes and bring a huge truck full of sand to school and wash/strain/bleach it really good so my birds can dust bathe and walk on something softer than rocks.....

jee wiz i gotta lotta work to do over here....

What color are you breeding? According to the APA standard,There are four colors(Red, Buff, Black, White)

Remember that APA standards have nothing to do with bloodline or genetics. Its physical characteristics and breeding true (50% of the time) I just looked it up and the closes breed with the body and type that resembles the NN standard is the Plymouth Rock.

- Weights are about a 1lb difference
- Plymouth Rock Females have 20 degree tail angle and males have 30 degrees ( NN standard both male and female are 20 degrees)
- Written standard of type is almost the same (NN standard just talks about absence of feathers in certain areas)
In my opinion breeding to Plymouth Rocks would be your best bet to improve your birds. For rocks you have 3 colors that can help you depending on what color you breed.
- Buff Plymouth Rock
- White Plymouth Rock
- Barred Plymouth Rock

If you are working on blacks then use Barred Plymouth Rocks you would have to use a none barred rooster. If you were to cross breed to improve traits. Then you have to breed to get the double Naked neck gene. That can mean breeding siblings together or breeding back to NN.

All four colors. Right now I have a fairly promising buff pullet, but I'm still getting red leakage in my blacks. I'll be working on breeding white ones this year. I've got one decent red, but all of her offspring are showing too much black. I may have to forgo the red for now.

I had bought some from a breeder in Tucson, and I had a donation from another special byc gal and I tell you breeder qualities that are from Heritage breeds are awesome!! So indeed they are expensive but they're worth it if you want good quality and nice sized Birds, for sure!:D

Do you still have yours, and what breed were you going for? My three 6-month old Australorps are of the Rattlesnake Ridge Line, and my three 4 month old Australorp pullets are of the Hupp's Farm Line.

I have quite a few that I started with however I've decided that barred Rocks Don't lay big enough eggs for me, the the blue americana's go Broody too often. The blue amerucana's are not worth eating because they're too small and scrawny and my opinion. Pardon my spelling on some of the names here. My black Copper Maran girls I've really enjoyed their dark colors and my Easter Eggers who I mated my (bcm)with the black Copper Marans roo
to get some olive Eggers for fun, kicks and giggles! :p

Some days you just need a good old-fashioned hug, and another friend to understand and listen. I only have green plastic fence left and that is on its way out after it completely breaks!:/
Well tomorrow's a new day!:D
