Arizona Chickens

Hey guys! Just wanted to say hi. I'm on my search for veterinarian jobs since my graduation is fast approaching. I have always gravitated towards Arizona since visiting for the first time in 2008. I tried looking at other areas, but here I am fairly certain I will end up outside Phoenix. The other states just weren't quite for me. I have a trip planned at the end of those month to do some interviews and to look at the area better. So far I have interviews in cave creek and Prescott valley. Then the third practice is more spread out around the northern suburbs of Phoenix.

I've been told lots of people are getting into backyard chickens out there. Is that true? I'm hoping to be able to see some chicken clients to get my fill of birds and some of the practices have been super happy about that. Hoping I can get some chickens myself again at some point!

Maybe I'll see ya'll shortly!

Yep, lots of chicken happenings. There are lots of areas in the southeast valley who have chickens. Plus the more rural areas. I think there's only 1 chicken vet that I've heard about in the valley. There might be more-most are for dogs & cats.

Come on out. Think you'll like it here.

Welcome, and I am glad that you have chosen Arizona! There are a lot of people over here where I am that have chickens too, including myself.

I like the fact that Chickerdoodle13 also wants to work with poultry and other birds. That makes for a more marketable veterinarian, other than working on cats, dogs, pet hamsters and iguanas, blah, blah, blah.

Chickens are utilitarian critters and have served us well over the years, but with small backyard flocks getting more popular, the little buggers get attached and bond to you, hence, the pet with benefits. I don't know if I would take a chicken to a vet, unless it was a prized SOP breed, but it's nice to know that there would be one out there to offer all their knowledge, advice and service to the worrywarts out there.

Chickerdoodle13, I hope you come out here, get your foot in the door somewhere, "study and show thyself approved", and you may eventually end up opening your own practice. You may even have your own web page from all your experiences.

I can imagine taking a chicken to a vet and getting that blank stare. I got that look and laughter from the service staff when I took in my old 386 computer and one of these for repair.

Anybody still have one of these?

Anyhoo, congrats on your upcoming graduation and hope you can pursue your career out here in Arizona. --BB

Thanks for all the warm welcomes! I am really, really looking forward to my visit in two weeks. Our weather has been snowy and cold here. I'm looking forward to leaving that in the past.

I hope that my desire to work with birds and poultry will be marketable! Originally, I wanted to work in the poultry industry but was not a fan of the location of the jobs or the amount of traveling involved.

At the very least, I would like to hold classes or some informational type things for poultry owners in the area.

I will keep you all updated though! Seems like vets are in need in the area right now so hopefully I'll leave with at least one job offer.

Welcome! I actually live south of Tucson and finding a vet willing to even look at a chicken is darn near impossible. But yes, there are a lot of backyard chicken keepers out here. My neighbor/friend actually owns one of the best vet clinics in our area, but I'm not sure if you want to practice this far south. If you think you might be interested, PM me and I'll give you the name of his clinic. He has a few partners who've bought into the business but I know he himself is looking to retire in the near future so there may be an opening with plenty of growth prospects. And the clinic is only 5 minutes from my home/farm, so if you really need a chicken fix I could definitely provide that.

That's awesome, Desertchic! Thanks so much for the offer. I'm going to see how my first visit/round of interviews goes but if I don't find something good when I go out this time around, I may take you up on getting that info!

Glad to hear there are lots of backyard chickens out that way. When I was still considering industry, it meant I wouldn't be able to have birds while I worked. Now, I'm free to have whatever I want! I'm pretty excited about that. It's been a while since I've had chickens of my own.

Yes, we can use someone like you, and others in the poultry field out here in AZ. too!

How fun, @Chickerdoodle13.. yes we love the Wild, Wild West. If you drive threw the Phoenix area pop on over for tea in the garden.. or by the flock. We have 2 chicken's left but really love the water feature for the garden after the duck's are done playing in the their water....

Quick question what a reasonable price to sell my eggs for?

Well it depends on wether you are selling for breeding or consumption.

Conspumtion I sell my eggs for $3.50 a dozen, and deduct that .50 cents if someone rupplies their own egg cartons.

Right now, a Free Range, non- growth hormone induced, large dozen of eggs is flippin' $7 at most stores.

And we are getting those in our own backyard.

I would sa I COULD raise my prices but I dont really use the money for anything accept feed.... (Which it only pays half of anyway soooo.....)

Breeding/Fertilized Eggs: Depends which breed you are selling. The higher the demand of teh breed the more you can sell a fertilized egg for. Economically anyway.

Also check out the forum on Emergencies/Diseases/Injuries/Cures. You don't know what professionals may be lurking/participating in there, and they could possibly help you in networking around the area with their connections. Again, congrats and best of luck to you. --BB
