Arizona Chickens

As a matter of fact, I do. I always have fertile NN eggs as my primary NN rooster, Heisenberg, is housed with and ranges with the flocks year-round. I just took down another breeding pen after fulfilling several orders for hatching eggs and will be rearranging the birds in another breeding pen to accommodate my Silver Grey Dorking flock that's reaching POL. Just let me know when you're ready for eggs and what you may be looking for (color, egg color, etc.) and I can set up breeding pens according to your goals. Oh....and you might want to check out the Naked Neck Turken thread here on the BYC. We spend a lot of time posting photos and bragging about our birds. :) This is Heisenberg, my primary breeder: Both the white + barred cockerel and the red barred cockerel from my previous post will be retained as breeders as well, and I also have hens and pullets that carry the barred gene. I'm also working on creating mottled NNs, most of which will carry the blue egg gene.
Fantastic! Thanks much I've seen your beautiful boy. He is gorgeous! All your birds are though. I have spent some time over there in that thread, but since my little NN died I haven't been over there. Blue eggs are nice but my priority is the naked neck. I love the way they look and if we end with a rooster I would keep him. Interesting that you figured out how to set things up for customization though. I will be thinking about that for sure.

We like Easter Eggers! Haven't heard of Olive Eggers, but a couple of EE's we have now lay an olive looking green. :) Thanks! We just lost a Rhode Island Red that was a great layer, how do they do here?

When you move here, let me know and maybe I'll sell you some of my own olive Eggers. And my RIR's aren't that bad here. I get an egg about every other day from mine.

If you ever get any more like this that you don't want, let me know. I will gladly give them a happy home. ;-)

LOL! That's my sweet Rue! She's got just a hint of Cochin blood in her, making her fluffier than her flock mates. Believe it or not, when she was a chick her head was pecked so severely that the flesh had been removed right down to her skull bone. I had to keep her isolated from the rest of the flock for weeks while she healed, and once reunited she was the alpha in the group.

I have a couple of her mother's eggs in the incubator right now. I'm hoping to get at least one more pullet like her out of the mix.

Thank you deserteggs, I will let you know when we make it there.

I know, 2 years seems forever, but I need those two years to make it, $-wise. :) It's fun planning a coop and run for them, and looking at houses.

I can see how NN can be cute, but when I brought it up to hubby, he replied with a big "NO, my chickens have to be cute and fuzzy!!" I'll work on him, lol.

I hear you on the pans of water, that's a great suggestion!

For what it's worth, I felt the same way as your husband when I first saw a picture of a Naked Neck. Looked like a vulture to me. When I first got involved in raising chickens here in AZ my main focus was on laying hens and their manure for my garden. I planned to eat my birds when production started to slip so I was also interested in dual purpose birds that would make good table fare when their job was done. I figured out most hatchery birds didn't fit this bill too well because they're smaller than the original heritage birds so I started looking into breeding so I could breed larger birds and end up with better dual-purpose chickens. Well one thing lead to another, started going to shows and all and now I have both a layer flock and SOP birds that I started breeding this year for the shows. When I was looking at suitable layer breeds I had a few in mind but then after talking to Desert Chic on here about Naked Necks I decided to give them a go because all the qualities she spoke of in her Naked Necks were qualities I valued in a dual purpose chicken too, not so much for exhibition but for dual purpose laying and table. Long story short, I took a leap of faith and got a few straight run NN's from a hatchery, and while I'm sure selectively bred NN's would be superior, the birds I'm raising now far exceeded my expectations in every area. I saved the two best cockerels and plan to breed them with the same attention to detail as the SOP birds I have, only for now my goal is to produce the best dual purpose NN I can. I'll more than likely acquire better stock this year so I have a good head start, but I gotta tell ya, even the hatchery NN's are really outstanding birds. I don't know if you plan to BBQ any of your birds at some point but the extra NN cockerels we cooked up were A #1 the best birds we ever ate. Even my Mother went back for seconds and she's 84 and I usually have to get after her to eat more. Just sayin', your husband might not think much of them now but if he wants a chicken breed that'll win the utility bird of the year award he really ought to give them a second look. I know I did and I'm really glad I listened to Desert Chic on this one. Also, they start to look a lot prettier after you stare at them for a while.

Heading out your way EARLY tomorrow morning! I set up four interviews and I'm very excited. The weather in the northeast has been rainy, cloudy, and cold. I'm looking forward to the sunshine and nice weather! I'll be visiting Cave Creek, Prescott Valley, Scottsdale, Glendale, Tempe, and Surprise. Seems like some beautiful areas!

Have a safe trip out here. The closet that you will be to me of those places that you mentioned is Tempe. I live rural in the city of Maricopa. Hubby and I have friends over here that are originally from New Jersey.

You couldn't be coming out at a better time. We're finally enjoying spring weather instead of premature summer. It's perfect jeans and T-shirt weather right now. Enjoy!
