Arizona Chickens

@DesertChic Thank you for taking in those girls. I would have probably puked if I heard of another flock almost wiped out from crazy neighbors. This one story made my stomach sick. I think how sad your friends must be. I have been too close to giving up my flock because of my cancer - when its really getting me down - but my DH always says no - we can work it through. He's right - it relaxes me and brings me joy. All good things for cancer. And when I'm feeling good everything gets kinda caught up!

Hello, all! :) New to chicken-keeping and the forum overall, and currently located in the East Valley.
My family and I currently have 14 chickens, and when our feed store gets more chicks in in a few days, we're thinking of getting 4 more hens. We currently have 11 hens and accidentally ended up with 3 roosters.
So sad to see the video about the poisoned chickens - some people are just awful. :(
Excited to talk with/read posts by some fellow chicken owners located in my state! :)

I do have 2 questions, though. lol Firstly, with the storm that recently blew through, it sure brought in a load of mosquitoes in my area. One of my roosters has a little scab on his comb, could it be Fowl Pox? Has anyone else had a case of it from this last storm? He's about 4 months old - could this cause any issues for him? (Excuse the chicken in the back. lol)

And secondly, one of my roosters has a bit of a cut/tear? on his wattle. It's not all the way through, but it looks kinda nasty and is bleeding. Is Blu-Kote safe to use on him?

Welcome! If you can't find blu-kote then you could probably just clean it off with fresh water and keep an eye on it. These birds are more resilliant than we give them credit for.

Could be dry pox. Could be a comb injury from sparring with the other roosters. Dry pox is not a big deal. It is common and virtually unavoidable. Wet pox is a bigger deal. (Wet pox has significant respiratory symptoms.) It is also less common. If your chickens are not having respiratory problems, I wouldn't worry about it. Just control the mosquitoes as best you can.

Alrighty, thank you! I kept adding it as an attachment, oops. lol I'll definitely be cleaning it off and looking for Blu-Kote spray; apparently Walmart sells it. Should I get like an antiseptic to put under the Blu-Kote, or will the Blu-Kote help heal it/prevent infection?

Thank you! :) Definitely hoping for Dry Pox, then. lol He is my most aggressive little Rooster, and he seems to be doing just fine, so that's probably what it is.

He sure aint afraid of the camera!!! Haha!! :D
If I remember right blu-kote is a mild antiseptic. Just clean the area and apply.

lol He's knocked it out of my hands a few times trying to get a picture of him! He likes to look at himself in the front camera. And alright, thank you. :) We cleaned it up and he seems to be doing well, and I haven't seen any of the others pecking it so far. Scabbed up already, too.
