Arizona Chickens

So I finally had to break down and clean out one of the pens today that was waaaay too dirty. It was 92* with a whopping 69% humidity, but I got 'er done. I hauled out 24 5-gallon buckets of compostable pine shavings + chicken manure from that one small coop. (Yes, I use the deep litter method.) I dumped half of those buckets on the ground where I'll be planting some buckwheat for the chickens and soil improvement and let the flocks spread it out for me. I've gotta say, they can be mighty helpful in the garden sometimes and did an excellent job. Not a terrible way to spend the morning, and I rewarded myself with some well-earned ice cream afterward. Yeah....I love being a chicken gal.

There are just too many bad people out there.

I actually broke my rule about not taking in adult birds this past year when a FB friend of mine in Phoenix begged me to take her chickens before her own neighbors turned on her. She was afraid of the same type of behavior because her neighbors didn't like the "egg songs" the girls sang. Her hens are super quiet compared to many of mine, and very sweet. It just broke my heart that she couldn't keep them.

Yes, it's hard for people closer to the city to have chickens. The neighbors won't like the noise that the chickens make, although they think that you like the noise of their dogs constantly barking. I'm glad that I don't live in the city anymore, and can even have roosters.
