Arizona Chickens

Do you have any problems with the chickens eating them? Especially when they're still pupae?

Yes those chickies will slurp them down. I put them where they cannot get to them. I use a feed bag with poop in it as I kinda know when they should be coming and put them in there. They hatch and do their thing. Sometimes when Arbico sends me extras I will bury it in the compost pile where birds or ground squirrels can't get to them. You can do so many things to keep them out of chicken's beak territory. I'm so glad I put out the extra money. Even though we bloomed a giant crop after the end of July rains when I got my eliminators they mostly took care of them. I have 20 girls and a giant compost pile, plus I live across the road from cotton crops this year, alfalfa last year and 4 horses just a short distance away - maybe about 3/4 acres (I have been known to go and bury the eliminators in their poop area!). Arbico has a solar fly system that I would like to get too although I haven't done enough research yet.

My niece in Tucson said the ACE store on 22nd (?) has birds in now - special breeds, speckled Sussex; lavender Orpingtons; naked necks; splash marans and many, many more. I try to only get new chicks in early spring/late winter months so they begin laying around the time the others molt and I had the feeding of everybody the starter food, etc. BUT geez this store is calling me. Its an hour's drive but I must still sit on my hands!!

I talked to an ACE associate a few years back and was told that they get HUGE orders delivered at a central location and they are distributed to the various ACE stores throughout Tucson. You may not have to drive all the way to the east side at 22nd/Kolb area. That's close to the Air Force Base.

Maybe find an ACE Hardware location on the NW side and save you the headache of driving across town facing all the idiot drivers out there. --BB

So I work at Barking iron Photography, on weekend nights, 3 hours a night min. wage, and then i work 4 days a week babysitting for 3 hours a morning for $15 an hour, no taxes.

Stick with the photography thing,,, even though it doesn't pay as well... You take awesome photos... show them your stuff, and learn all you can... sorry PetCo didn't work out..

It's been a few weeks since I've checked in here and haven't received any email notifications. I do get emails about the latest feeds and goodies, but nothing from the AZ threads. I have checked "watched threads" to this forum and (Deep Litter Method?). There's been alot of activity in the AZ thread, but received no notification. Thanks @Bobby Basham! I resisted going to get chicks - even tho they had cream legbars! I prefer to grow a new crop in spring so will be trolling them then. I'll have to call a couple on the other end of town to see if they too get these types of birds too. Thanks again!

im oing to wait a few years for college. earn up some money, get married, let nathaniels AF schedule get a flow. Then once he is able to transfer his Gi Bill to me, I will go into vet school!

hes going to use his Haxelwood act for college so he can rank up further than an E6 and make lots of good moneys.

Since you use the Eliminators, was wondering if you could answer some questions for me. (BTW my fly problem is not severe).
!.How do these lil wasps come delivered? Live in a baggie?
2. Why do you need to keep getting a fresh batch every so often? Cant these reproduce and multiply?
3. The peeps with horses probably don't have their animals eating the wasps?

I don't want to start a new topic, but I need to know what size of container does one need when they buy 25 or 50 pound bags of feed/scratch, whatever (I personally prefer stainless steel). I don't want to store any food in my garage and may end up building my own shed instead of buying some of the ridiculous-priced items out there. My future flock will be under 12 hens, and just want to know how some of you handle/store food on a smaller scale. Thanks so much! --BB

I used a galvanized garbage can, small size. It was hot when I had chickens in the CA desert, I did not want to buy too much feed and have it get rancid, or ants! I forget the size, but it is about 1/2 the size of a big can, so about 25 gal?
