Arizona Chickens

LOL! As much as I like the look of frizzled NNs, no I don't have any myself. I do have two frizzled EEs that I cross with one of my NN roosters, which produced outstanding hens that lay big blue and green eggs, but the only hints they have of frizzling are a few "perky" feathers on their heads.

I had considered making Showgirls, but my focus really is more on meat birds and those Showgirls are both small, and much harder to pluck with those downy feathers.

Right now all I have are extra Nn cockerels, not homozygous NNs, that don't fit into my own breeding plans. One is an EE cross (Seamus), one is a Dorking-mix cross (Ash), and the third has a little Bielefelder in him (Abraham).

Seamus - This photo really doesn't do him justice. He has splash of white and blue.

Abraham - his tail is slow to grow in but is growing in black.

O gosh i love all your pics & OMG i would love getting that fuzzy down look like a puff ball , with the NN x silkie with a top hat ,i really like it , especially with the NN & a top hat ...HA... my friends in NYC raise Chinese crested dogs that's a hairless dog with a puff of hair on its head, so my friends & i all love that NN xsilkie look and started calling show girl chickens, the chinese crested of chicken world HA ..lol.. we all really do like that puff ball silkie xNN look , so i was thinking of getting in to the standard size silkies & crossing them with a NN, i read they have standard size silkies in Europe.! but none here yet, but it would be amazing to see an entire flock of them ..HA :D;) i already know of people who got the silkie x NN cross for pets in NY NJ CT, and they love them ..! cant beat them for being so sweet & cute HA right :D:thumbsup ;) :)

I don't really have a set recipe. I add Celtic sea salt to the stock pot, followed by a TBSP of apple cider vinegar, and then start throwing in veggies and herbs: lots of garlic, onions, at least two large carrots and two large stalks of celery; fresh rosemary, thyme and sage; 1-2 bay leaf; a sprinkling of whole black peppercorns and sometimes I add a hint of turmeric. Add whatever bones and pieces you have available. Fill the pot up with water and bring it to a boil. Reduce to simmer and cover...and cook that stock all darn day. If the water gets low and the stock doesn't yet tasted developed enough you can add more water.

I also often make it a double stock, which means I start out by boiling a whole chicken in the stock base for roughly two hours. After removing all the meat from the chicken for our meals, I put the bones back into the pot and add more bones and parts from the freezer, and still cook it all day.

Honestly, the trick is cooking long and slow until even the feet fall apart and everything is essentially mush. Then you just strain out all the bits and store the broth either in the freezer, the fridge or can it.
Much the same here. Sometimes, I cool it in the frig overnight and skim off the fat, then simmer some more before straining it. "Clean out the frig soup".

He actually got his name because of how he looked as a chick - pure platinum, which made me think of the ultimate platinum blonde, Marilyn Monroe. If he had turned out to be a hen, he would've been Marilyn, but as a cockerel I just had to go with Monroe. ;)

Oh....and "Strippers" are their official classification. A Stripper is a Showgirl with no neck muff at all.

They look good! A lot of barring, crossed with Marans for the dark eggs?

No Maran blood. Most of the barring comes from crossing with one of my White Rock hens, who happens to carry the barring gene even though she doesn't personally show any barring in her plumage. She's given me some outstandingly meaty NNs that are also great layers and really beautiful. This is one of my favorite hens from that crossing:

Trixie: She lays a deep teal/blue/green egg.

I've also crossed a few of my birds with my Bielefelders since they are NOT heat tolerant at all, but are exceptionally sweet, friendly birds. That cross of NN/Biel gave me hens that are not only much, much more heat tolerant, but also quite large and meaty and excellent layers of medium-dark brown eggs, though not as dark as most Maran eggs. And my NN/Biel crosses are some of the friendliest hens on my property after my Biel rooster, Bosch, who's a total lover and lap chicken. (He literally runs across the yard just so he can jump on my lap and snuggle in against my shoulder.)
