Arizona Chickens

The link worked for me. All of those green horned caterpillars have been gone now for about a week, but when they were all over the place here, my chickens went nuts eating them! It didn't seem to hurt them a bit. I guess it was more protein for them? One of my hens even ate a lizard a few months back, and she's still ok, too.

Chickens will catch and eat just about anything. They need protein in their diet and they get it from insects and other animals when they are allowed to forage on their own. It's normal for them to catch small animals and eat them. Including lizards and mice.

Mine don't free-range, so after a couple of days of watching them eat the ones crawling around close enough to the pen where they were grabbing them and eating them, I started deliberately bringing them more. Even my rooster was eating them, when I did that, because the females couldn't grab up that many all at once! lol

I moved my compost pile the other day. There were a ton of crickets in there, chickens had a blast! So did the lizards.
I keep a baby gate leaning against the wall behind my grapes, and I let the grass and weeds go wild there so the lizards have a place to hide. From my goofy dog AND the chickens. But I've seen 5 chickens chasing 1 with a lizard all over yard like little raptors. So funny when they run!

I was at ACE on 22nd today and they have a HUGE shipment of day olds right now, including OLIVE EGGERS, SALMON FAVROLES, SEBRIGHTS, LAVENDER ORPHINGTONS, AND POLISH OF BEARDED AND NON BEARDED VARIETIES . if anyone was looking.

I seriously almost brought some salmon favrolles home today, but after that flock down size my mother said she would take a flame torch to them If I did.

OHHHH it was so hard to leave the cut elittle vanilla bearded babied behind...

Okay, an associate at ACE told me years ago that they get chicks shipped at their major center, somewhere on the NW side, then they are distributed to various ACE Hardwares throughout the city.

ALSO check out OK Feed and Supply. Their chick selection is supposedly huge and they also sell different types of hay and straw, bedding, and a bunch of stuff for horses and other livestock and feeds galore. They are not your typical "Petco", Walmart or whatever dealer. Their website is under repair right now, but they are on Facebook. I plan on stopping by in a few days. When I go there, I'll try to give an update on my findings. I think it should prove interesting.

If you can, check them out on Facebook. Everything is not there, but they offer enough info to let you know what they have. They are on East Fort Lowell just west of Alvernon. I don't know about their prices, but it may be a one-stop shopping for many folks. --BB

Some of you may be wondering........ Who is this Caveman Yankee from Illi-noisE. Note my spelling indicates that it is not very quiet around here. Might be thinking,,,,,,,, is he a G-man spying on our Arizona thread.:lau Well, I am quite familiar with Phoenix. Have friends there. Family member recently moved back from Fountain Hills. The heat was one factor. Camel Back Mountain, Encanto Park, Queen Creek, and many more are familiar places to me. Uncle lived near Central and Georgia. I often go on Google earth and revisit the areas I used to walk around. Church on Central and Highland still there. I was there first in 1969.
Being active here on BYC, I would encounter peeps from Arizona with questions. I would answer to the best of my ability, and then direct them to join the Arizona thread. Get the best answers from those that live there. :thumbsup
After doing this multiple times, I decided to subscribe to thread for easy access to give to others. I may visit Phoenix in the near future, but no set plans. When I am on this thread, I can reminisce of times past. :)
In 1970 Sky Harbor Airport was slightly different. We boarded airplane in this fashion.

Now only President gets to do it this way. :lau

Thi guys sorry it's been a few weeks, we have been having internet issues :he Anywho, I tried my best to catch myself up and it seems like everyone is doing well! I wanted to add a quick update to our ant issue. I am lucky enough to own chickens who are interested in ants as snacks, but we started getting big red ants in the coop and around the run (probably because of the chicken food?) and we were being overrun. DH likes to use amdro poison but I won't allow it around the chickens. I searched online and found my answer, and it has worked so well I had to share! It's so simple, I felt silly. It's BOILED WATER! Free and environmentally friendly! Just boil some water and pour it slowly down the offending ant hole a few times a day and they won't return to that spot. Be careful not to do this around trees or plants as the hot water can harm the roots. I was so happy to find something that I know won't harm the girls. Now if only I can find something so simple to rid the ranch of flies!

we've had a few small frogs haggin out in the mansion and their house and they've done wonders with insect control including ants, termites and flies, beetles, etc.

the only problem is they get big and then scare my bubus lol :lau that or Mohawkie's (avatar pic) hunter instincts kick in and she decides frog will be on her menu...
