Arizona Chickens

So these Austra-Whites are not much better than a straight Leghorn? I don't want to be around any nervous birds.

I've never had any straight leghorns to observe them, so I wouldn't really know. I only know that I don't want to keep them to breed back into my good Australorps over here. I guess if no one takes them, I could always make some good chicken broth for my dog out of them.

I already have some ready that I have set aside. All of the eggs are Australorps.
Thanks BlueBaby.
Where are you located and how much do you charge for four fertile eggs?
I need at least four more of a different type. Would be great if I can find two more types of eggs, four each.

I live rural outside of the city of Maricopa. I don't live too far from the Harrah's Ak-Chin Casino. I sell my hatching eggs for $1.00 each, or $10.00 for the dozen. I don't ship, so they have to be picked up here.

Since they are diluted crosses to begin with, no telling what results you may get if you were to breed them... some type of 2nd generation weird mix?

Most likely so. I guess they would be for someone who likes to have a mixed breed chicken flock. The only one that I am interested in besides my pure Australorps, is those Naked Necks, although I don't really consider them as a breed except for the original Transylvania ones maybe. Once they get to the USA people start mixing them with other breeds for colors or other things. The Naked Neck is really a gene, not a breed.

I have no problem with a bunch of mutts, just wondering if crossing the Whites back to the Australorps would produce a decent egg layer with a calmer disposition.

Both of those breeds are good egg layers, so I wouldn't doubt that crossing them back into the Australorps would make them not only bigger, but they would pick up more of the Australorp genes in future generations.

Let me preface this by saying I think australorpes rock...especially for the desert...anything mixed with one should be a great mutt :D
I do have two straight leghorns - one white and one brown. They are my most outgoing and people-friendly birds, which totally surprised me, as I had heard they were a flighty breed. The brown gal was a tad "wild" when she was young, but she is now my lap chicken and wants to be carried around the yard haha! I did hand raise them (aka spoiled them rotten...) so that may have had something to do with it. Maybe they are naturally flighty and nervous but in my opinion, leghorns are fabulous additions to the flock, and boy does my white gal produce!!
