Last September, after a week of 80degree days, I obtained some fertile eggs for my broody hen to sit on. Two weeks in, the temps spiked again, out of 9 eggs only 2 made it out of the shells alive. The first turned out to be a roo, I'm not allowed in Tempe to have roo's so Jacob Kelly found him a new home. The second, was disabled, my best description is something like cerebral palsy. We have been babying this chicken, a padded cage, objects to help balance on... etc... my husband is very emotionally attached. I have alternately been involved, or concerned for the quality of life issue. We don't eat our chickens, they are our friends and pets. Again, for whatever reason, my husband is very emotionally attached to this chicken.... Yesterday...it started to crow.... uggggggg. Now what?????

That's so sad these birds are special to us, will a crow collar help? Or keeping him inside? Anyhow I'm sure everyone here understands :hugs hope the best for you on this

we haven't had luck with crow collars on our able bodied roo's . This one allready has trouble balancing, and getting his neck into the feed cup. I'm not even sure how he balanced to stretch his neck out to crow. It maybe, that he had to be in just the right position, and that's why we have only just now heard him at 6mos.

Is it possible for him to be an inside pet? I mean, people have noisy birbs inside as pets all the time, right?

"No, we have a parrot, he's an a-hole and likes to crow like a rooster because he thinks its funny"...

No idea but I suspect one of the RIR (which are likely red sex links) as they have the most developed waddles/combs of the bunch. Working from home today, had the windows open and hoped I'd hear some commotion. But I just checked, another egg just like it was in there. Happened between 7:30 and 11:00.

Couple questions though:
1. How large will these eggs typically be once they've been laying for a while?
2. How long could I expect it to be before the size stabilizes?
3. Should I worry about calcium intake? I just switched them to a layer feed last week.

My red star sex link was the second to begin laying in my flock, one week after the white leghorn. She lays everyday and her eggs are the largest in the nest box! I have not weighed them, but they are a darker shade of brown than my other breeds, and noticeably larger. Size stabilized after a few weeks for my girl. I was also worried about calcium intake, as I had some laying and some who were not laying yet. Too much calcium can be hard on a chicken who is not using it to make eggs, but I believe this damage occurs over long periods of time. If your birds are about to begin laying, it is ok. If you want to add more calcium, offer some oyster shell in a separate dish. I had several soft shell eggs from the leghorn, and gave her plain yogurt, which helped. Hope this helps!
