Even if you don't do the float and make it automatic, its still holds more water than you think. My huge one is not automatic and I only have to fill it every other day and its never less than half full. I was going to sell the ones I posted a pic of because everyone liked it but I did not want to sell them if I could not get the price way down. I make feeders and four designs of nest boxes, too bad I have not figured out a way to reduce the price of the waterers the same way.

I am in the East Valley and I will not be in town this summer. I got a job at a camp in Prescott and I was wondering if anyone on here would be interested in fostering some of my bantam hens for the summer. They include D'Uccles, sultans, frizzles, standard Polishes, standard cochins, and some other breeds. There is one frizzled rooster mixed in with the 12 hens, but he does not act like a rooster at all. I just need someone to keep an eye on them so that they don't get eaten by hawks, stung by scorpions, or get heat exhaustion. They need a fully fenced free ranged backyard with grass, lots of shade and a night enclosure/ chicken coop and I can provide the food, cages, and supplies if needed. I would also like to visit them once in a while on the weekends when I come down during the summer. This would be from the end of May to the beginning of August 2009. I left them here last summer in the care of my family and 5 of my favorite hens died, because they did not care for them very well. Anyone here in the valley or in Prescott interested?

Thanks for the welsome Prestor and Mrs. Bell,
We want to get some hens for laying and eventually we may add a rooster so we can hatch a few eggs to replenish/grow our flock. We are new to raising chickens so we are thinking that getting chickens a 5-7 weeks old is the way to go so we don't have to worry about a brooding box and all the issues of having chicks.
We have done some reading and we would like to get 2-3 Rhode Island Red's and 2-3 Australorp's or Americana's.

I agree with Mrs. Bell - good choice of chickens. If you do get a rooster, I'd stay away from the RIR roosters. The hens are supposed to be real nice, but people say the RIR roosters are very aggressive once their hormones kick in. Easter eggers (americanas) & australorps are very gentle birds - maybe one of those would be a good rooster choice.
