Arizona Chickens

@travelingtacks :welcome

This thread is pretty much the go to for many things that pertain to chickens. We share what we find in other threads and most of us have a few summers under our belts so ask away!
Shade and water are first priorities. Mud puddles help a lot. Ice in wading areas during really hot days helps. Some use misters. Some use frozen jugs of water. Many of us try all of the above. Frozen treats are nice too :)

Your coop needs a lot of ventilation and dust is a constant here.

Hope you enjoy AZ and BYC both!

Man, it was disgusting today outside. and no rain to make it worth while.

I had the exact opposite problem. Since the weatherman said we'd be taking a break from the rain I set up to butcher some extra cockerels. Before the first one had even finished bleeding out it started thundering right over my head. I barely made it into the house before the skies opened up....40+ mph winds, driving rain, hail..... It was crazy. It rained for nearly 4 hours at my house, and then when the sun finally came back out it turned insanely hot and humid. I just gave up for the day....one bird done, two left for today. Fortunately, it's cloudless here right now.

@DesertChic - just thank those mountains! That is crazy weather - not even enough time to kinda button things up. Humid and hot here.
Just took out another round of frozen water bottles and put on the hose for a puddle. A little cleaning up poop and I'm back in the house for a bit until I take out either ice for the puddle or more bottles - probably ice. They will all be in the shade. I'm thinking of putting in another shade area - not sure where yet. Stay cool and safe all of you

Hello fellow Arizonian BYC owners!

Am newly relocated to SE AZ, near Sierra Vista. And my husband thought we would start our new flock here, with chicks this time. Previously we had 1yr hens to start with and much easier, I think so far!

Anyhoo, I've got lots of questions about raising chicks-to-chickens in this SE climate. Any info or direction to another thread is greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.
Cheers.

Don't you just hate having your chicken dinner interrupted?

Got new feed today decided to try nutrena naturevwise laying crumble

So far it has pretty good crumble not dusty but does have several long pellets in it the color is more yellow then my last feed

The trough is working for the ee's there is no tiny bird or prairie dog or lizard poop in it yayyy I might get more and do mostly fence troughs...

And GUESS WHAT???!!!! :jumpy

I talked it over with hubby and I'm going to give a Buff egg to my broody ee Rambita and let it hatch I never thought we would.... I'm excited!:wee

Welcome, This is THE thread place to be!
Chicks or Pullets? Personal choice, I find the chicks are more social, but if you don't want to wait for eggs.....

Ouch, nope travel that way only as needed. Next time I head to my sisters with the truck Ill send you a msg
I would be very grateful

That's awesome... give her a few eggs, just in case , plus always figure that 1/2 will be roos....
