Mine are pro's at scratching all the bedding out of the nest boxes. i had to line some of them with outdoor carpeting to keep the bottom soft so the eggs won't crack, because they'd scratch them down to the hard bottom. How was the alfalfa when you were using it? Did yours leave some of that in the boxes? I'm thinking of trying hay to see if it'll stay longer than a few days.I got the old yucky alfalfa out of the nest box and replaced it with fresh new pine shavingsIt smells really good in there now. I have a feeling when I go back out there the chickens will have had a pine shaving party and it will be everywhere...I added a little lip to the nest box so they can't kick it out as much but we shall see what happens.
The alfalfa worked very well, the only reason I didn't pick some up yesterday is because I wasn't in my husband's truck so I had to go with pine shavings. They didn't seem to play with the alfalfa as much, although they did eat it when it was fresh. Made for some VERY green poops hahaMine are pro's at scratching all the bedding out of the nest boxes. i had to line some of them with outdoor carpeting to keep the bottom soft so the eggs won't crack, because they'd scratch them down to the hard bottom. I see those cubes at my feed store. I think they are intended for horses. I picked up a bag intended for rabbits. They are pellets.(size)I actually got a bag of the cubes and soak one in water and the love it. But yes very green poops.
