@FeatherPugs youre right, a flake or two of alfalfa makes for a great boredom buster. When I had it down in the run I didn't even have to really break it up or spread it, the girls did all the work for me in a matter of days. Anyone know what makes better compost with the deep bedding method - pine shavings or hay? Or are they both pretty comparable? I have tons of pine shavings left over from doing the nest box (a little tiny bit of that stuff goes a looooong way!) so I was thinking I'll put that down in half of the run for the winter, try out deep bedding, and compost it in the spring. I'm also going to take down the misters this week.

@SonoranChick I have a big bag of pine shavings in the garage from some boards we had to plane down, so that's going to be the start of my deep bedding in the coop. And planning to put all the fall leaves into the run.

Will chickens eat crickets? We have a bunch of crickets hiding under logs in the yard. Thought they might have a fun time chasing them in a couple months.

Happy Sunday! Lots of work to do today on the coop so it's ready for these ladies when they're ready for it.

Love all the chat about alfalfa. I love the smell of alfalfa. Reminds me of horses. Good thing to keep in mind for snacks/ entertainment later on.

Chickens LOVE crickets, that was the first live treat mine got and it's definitely one of their favorite forms of protein.

@Geranium Just lift those log's up a bit in the daytime when the chickens are in there. The bugs will be trying to hide for safety, but the chicken's will be all over them! I've had a hen grab a lizard before, and the other's went nut's trying to take it away from her. She ended up looking pretty funny with just that lizard tail hanging out of her beak when she was about done swallowing it!

@BlueBaby that's what I was thinking! Just put a log down and wait for crickets to hide, then flip it over and let the chickens have a cricket party!

Are those black thing's that are attaching the hardware wire to the fencing those plastic tie-band's? If they are, I hope that you know that they won't last long out here in our sun and windy days. I used those before on my shade cloth that cover's my run and had to keep replacing them. I finally just used pieces of wire to hold them down. Those have been working out much better, and I haven't had to replace them again. Just a suggestion for you from my own experience.
