@igorsMistress - great article.
Thank you! This seems like an awesome site for information!!!@Shellysstuff7 Welcome - don't think I've done that yet. I've been up to my eyeballs in doctor appts for other folks and my DH. I have had a number of Aussies and they have been good. My oldest is 7ish - She disciplines the flock if needed. I do not keep a rooster - my preference. I also have had Orpingtons - I do enjoy them - I only have one left who is 5/6. I also have NN that are eye candy - mixed with barred rock, Delaware, Sussex - I love them and they do heat well plus are good layers and meat birds. I have some EEs as well. Right now I have 30 hens. Not everyone lays everyday so the eggs are busy but not out of control!!
@Happychi2019!! Welcome to you too! I love Dominiques. They are cheeky though - I have one girl that is magic and has figured how to get out (only when I'm not looking) and knows where the in-door to the yard is!! Cheeky! Your coop is beautiful. Sorry about your previous hens. I've always said the worse predator we have is dogs. All my dogs get chicken training so they don't bother the chickies. My last big girl (we lost her about 7 months ago to cancer) would go in the yard and all the girls would walk all over her. She was a love. Our current rescue chug tolerates them because they have good poop!! hahahaha......
I still have two broody hens - both EEs. One is a year old and the other is 5/6 - AND they are hard, hard, hard to break. I didn't even dig them out of their digs and put them back in the cage tonight. Bad me - probably doesn't help. Stay happy all......
Thank you! It's a great site and nice to chat with people from my own State!Hello and welcome all new Arizonans. I currently have 6 silkies an austolorp and a mixed breed that lays green eggs.
I have a Bresse/NN pullet from last September doing the same thing. I'm not letting her as I have enough broodies right now. Her sister has been sitting on eggs for a couple weeks already, and another Bresse/NN in another pen starting sitting last week. Not to mention the nest she's chosen is way to high off the ground. These Bresse/NN hens are proving to be very disposed to going broody!!![/QUOTE ]
Sounds great we all could use a good broody hen, good to know your Bresse/NN hens are good broodies..!!! sorry my pc was down for weeks, acting up badly but I got it back up on line in the end ...!!!!![]()

HI Cactusrota, gosh no I never found any one who had show girls to sell or eggs.?? but im not worried it will happen when its time, so im not worried....lol.... but before I find some show girls, im just spending time rebuilding my coops, & adding broodie wards is what I call them, some nest boxes a good size for all the broody mamma's & their chicks to live in, Im calling this area the broody ward...lol.. but great you have some nice colors in your flock , I love your mama hen with her chicks so very cute indeed , but yeah its not easy trying to stop the broodies, I just give up & give mine some golf balls to set on and call it a daycactusrota said:I was wondering how you were getting along... did you ever find any showgirls?
I gave up on stopping any of my hens from going broody. I've so far had 3 Bresse x NN hens hatch out chicks and the 4th just started sitting on eggs a couple days ago! Add in the "sister wives" that started it all and the Jersey Giant x NN that has been sitting for a couple weeks, that makes a total of 7 broodies this year so far!!!!
In order...

Alot of the babies from different hatches have been banding together lately like some gang of tiny fuzzy punks. Not sure if I should be worried or not... I'll see if I can get updated pics later today...
I have 2 barred rocks also. Stripes is bossy, Snow is mellower, but like my twins, they sometimes switch personalities just when u think u can tell them apart!!She is so cute! I’ve got a Delaware, she’s one of my very favorite gals. She is super friendly. Somewhere in the middle on the pecking order and very quirky. I adore that breed. I have a barred rock as well, I’m not sure if that’s the same as Plymouth Rock. She is a bit on the bratty side and can be aggressive. I have heard this is rare though, many people have better luck with that breed and think they are sweet.
