Arizona Chickens

Welcome back starri. Glad your sitter did a good job. I hope you enjoyed your trip! Why are you thinking about taking your broodys eggs? Heat?

It's supposed to be damn hot down here by next week, 108!
Not planning on taking her eggs, debating on starting a new incubator hatching.. just candled her eggs this evening, she started with 4, one got broken, two new ones were laid in her nest at the time, now I can't find but 4. Will have to do more digging tomorrow and see if I can find it. out of the 4 I candled 3 are active for sure, one I am not sure about. So I'll look for evidence of the 5th egg tomorrow..

You are a hatch-a-holic, so of course you want to make more chick's! :lau

Hate admitting it, but have too.. I've got at least 3 more coming from the broody.. so that will bring my total up to 30 if all of her eggs hatch ( 4 of them ) that number will go down when I can determine if they are Roo's or hens, I've already got 2 roo's. Maxing out at 50, 48 hens, 2 Roo's. I'll have to start selling my eggs to support their eating habits.

I know what you mean. I'm trying to keep the number that I have down right now. I need to sell a few of the young pullet's that I grew out, because they didn't end up as what I am looking to keep for my future breeding. 3 of those girl's recently have already started laying egg's. Then I also have 2 more pullet's that are younger than that who can be sold also.

Mine are all mutts, so doubtfully anyone would want to buy them..lol.. I can always hatch for others and get my fix that way ;)

Don't be surprised about some people will buy mutt chicken's. Those are the people who don't care about going to chicken show's, and just want to have hen's that will lay eggs well. If the pullet is already laying an egg, then they are assured that it's really a hen and not a rooster, plus if they just recently started laying egg's, they will have a long time left to lay egg's, and they don't have to wait months for a smaller chick to grow up to know that it's a girl. All of the hard work has already been done.

Edit: By the way, mine are mutt's too, but I have been selling some of them already. The people who bought my pullet's are happy with them too.

Oh I just about guarantee if you can just raise them until they lay their first egg you could probably sell them for up to $10 each. Laying hens, no matter the breed, will sell. About $10 each is the max for mixed breed though. People really like "point of lay" pullets because they know they aren't old/spent hens. I have found I can sell any hen that's 1 year old or less for that much. No matter the breed. I usually sell mixed ones for $5 each, though.
You can't even give away roosters.

I agree! That's how it is here too. I don't even ask to re-home any extra roo's. I just take care of that problem myself.
