Arizona Chickens

Did all the Arizona people fall asleep? How is everyone doing with the heat? I lost one of my golden laced cochins the other day. I knew she would not make another summer but still makes me sad. She had a stroke a few years ago and she never could do well in the heat after that. I always made sure she was cool and well taken care of but I guess this year she just decided to give it up. She laid her last egg that morning and then just layed down and passed on. Rest in peace Jellybean.

As for the heat, not doing to bad (we have a pool) otherwise it would be miserable

Working on keeping the chickies cool too

They love when I get the ground all wet for them. Helps them cool off, they are under this big orange tree so lots of shade

Im also trying to get pics of my suspected roos to see what everyone can tell me. But alas my camera was dead. Oh well, hopefully it charges fast.

Thank you for your sympathy. I knew she was nearing the end but I will miss her.

As for heat for us well misters, water hoses, green screen, and box fans are our friends.

Oh what I wouldn't do for a pool (with pool service)and an orange tree or two or fifty. I love when the orange trees bloom. That smell is intoxicating.

Hey remember that write up in the Arizona Republic recently that mentioned BYC and urban chickens? Well in that article I remember seeing where it listed the rules for chickens in different places like scottsdale, glendale, phoenix, and I think mesa too. I can't find the article or maybe I'm not looking in the right places. Someone posted the link to it on here too but I can't remember where. Maybe that will help.

Edit: sorry its not listed in the online article but it was in the printed article. oh well.

Are chickens allowed in Mesa? How about roosters?
You may have up to 10 chickens on the first one-half acre or less provided any enclosure is at least 40 feet from any neighboring residence, any coop is at least 75 feet from any other residence, it is kept sanitary and they are not allowed to run loose or create a noise disturbance. A rooster is also allowed as long as it does not violate any of the above regulations. (See Mesa City Code 6-4-20A, C, D, and E).

Hope that helps!! ^_^

Just thought I would finally show a picture of my personal coop after we cleaned up. I still have to finish decorating some of it but you get the idea. There is a stable, jail, merchantile, and town hall. Eventually the merchantile sign will have the word merchantile on it and the flag is going to get put up above the clock.

Behind those store fronts it is a wire top. You just can't really see that part which was the idea.
