Arizona Chickens

I had a similar situation about a year ago with one of my ameraucana hens. I isolated her and put the ACV in her water and just went out a couple of times a day and gave her a little chicken massage. She got better in a couple of days.
I've read that the enzymes in plain yogurt are good for a sour crop, which it sounds like you have.

Good luck!

Thanks,

I have to stop today and get the plain yogurt. I have sweetened yogurt, so I will avoid giving her that.

The only thing I can't do is isolate her. I don't have anywhere to put her. I need to get rid of that awful roo so I can use that pen.

Her crop is bigger this morning than it was last night. I am worried.

I will keep you posted.

Hello fellow zonies!

I've just joined up in the chicken keeping hobby. We live in far east Mesa. Does anyone have any suggestions for local places to get supplies like antibiotics and other such first aid staples? I'm trying to build a first aid kit for any emergencies that might arise and want to shop locally before having to order online.

We've just had chickies since early February, and they've only been outside for the past couple of months. So far it's been lots of fun!

Glad to see there are some many Arizonans! I look foward to learning from you all!

Glad to see so many of us in BYC! What an awesome site!

I'm raising Bantam Brahmas (or Brahma Bantams, if you prefer) in Palominas (Cochise County, between Sierra Vista and Bisbee). It hasn't even been a year yet, and I'm already having a blast raising them and selling eggs at the Bisbee Farmers Market. I have 11 hens and one roo, they have a 4'x8' elevated coop with shaded area for waterer and feeder beneath, and a 24/7 run 6'x32' where they spend most of their time (in the direct sunlight).

I haven't lost any to the heat, and rarely find one panting (though they really enjoy their dirt baths). One question for y'all, has anyone else had birds seemingly lose their adult feathers and grow fuzzy down feathers again? I assumed they were molting, then I read the following in the June/July 2009 Backyard Poultry http://www.backyardpoultrymag.com/issues/4/4-3/caring_for_your_poultry_in_hot_weather.html

Direct sunlight also has a negative effect on feather condition and can render birds unshowable until they have gone through a molt. This is particularly true if you live in an area that has high heat and low humidity. Low humidity dries out the feathers and they become brittle and more susceptible to breakage.

I can pretty much vouch for the above statement. I have a happy, healthy flock that looks like it went a few rounds with a coyote or two. No other symptoms or health concerns, though my roo is (understandably) less "active". Egg production has also dropped a little, from 5-6 to 4-5 per day, but three of my hens are broody off and on as well. Our temps have crept into the mid-90s, and it stays there most years.

I'm thinking of running shade cloth along the top of the run, but not if it's just for their appearance - they're not show quality anyway.

Any thoughts? Thanks, and I'll see you on Chicken Chat!

HI all,

I read the entries all the time about every day. A few entries back someone mentioned a swollen crop was a problem so i got worried. Since I am green about the chicks I went to a picture and looked up crop. My little golden one has had this lopsided lump on the front of her for awhile in fact about 2 weeks or more. So fear got to me and I assumed it was a swollen crop. I showed everyone and they all agreed that it definately looked different than the other chicks and pretty big. So My daughter said... lets pray for her. Everyone, grand children and all are praying for our chick. ( I have now crossed the line from chicken to pet) Anyway, the next day the crop was down and normal......

Hi Bryan. I also have a couple chickens that look AWFUl. They're only 7-8 months old, which I think is too young to be going through a molt. I never noticed any feather loss, but two of them have have fuzzy feathering on their backs - feathers look frayed.

We have 13 pullets - no roosters. One hen is broody and another just finished setting on her eggs and is back with the flock (not laying yet). Out of the 11 that are laying, we are usually getting 9-10 eggs per day.

Other than the ugly feathers, they seem very healthy - we use DE and I haven't seen any mites. They eat a 20% protein feed while in their pen/run and free-range about 4 hours per day. Their run is shaded and they don't spend a lot of time in the sun when out, so I don't think the sun is what harmed the feathers (maybe it is the dry heat?).

All 3 of the following pictures were taken today.

Production red's feathers (ignore the two light splotches - it's the sunlight):

My two barred rocks - the pullet on the left looks just awful (even worse in person)- the one on the right looks very normal:

This is the pullet pictured above that looks normal - just wanted to show how healthy she looks compared to the other:

I'd also love to know what is wrong with them. Anybody have any ideas?

Wow that looks just like what happens when the roo is doing his thing but you say you have no roos. Hmm very strange. I am curious to find out the answer. They do look healthy but its almost like the feathers are broken.

Hey all, I also am having lots of lost feathers. My chicks are about 5 months old. I wonder if they are loosing feathers because it has been over 100 a few days already, and very dry. I do water the run down twice a day, they love it, however I sure am seeing lots of feathers. None of my chicks look like they have been plucked yet, Willy my Roo is chasing the girls, but I don't think he is pulling out all the feathers.

How did I ever get along without my Peeps?
