Arizona Chickens

As I said in a previous post, I really don't know what is causing the feather issue but after reading what alot of others are saying I am wondering if it does have something to do with the humidity or lack thereof. I am curious, do you guys use misters or not? I am not having this issue and I do use misters. There has to be something to it because there is more than just a few having this problem.

I don't use misters. Sounds like it would be a great idea, if my chickens were in a run during the day. Ours hit the yard as soon as we get outside to turn them loose and stay out until dark. I guess we'll just have to live with ratty looking chickens.

I know that in my case, they're not molting. I have chickens that have had fizzy feathers for 6 months. I don't think it takes them quite that long to molt and they are still laying most every day (except the roosters).

I like the low humidity/sunlight explanation.

I don't use misters. Maybe the low humidity does have something to do with it. With us, it's not a molt - there are no feathers laying around the coop. The chickens aren't losing their feathers, the feathers have just turned fuzzy. They look just like AzElgin's chickens.

It's weird though, that most of my chickens are fine, it's just a few that look like that. Two of them have been bad for a couple months. A few more have some feather issues, but you have to look close. The rest look totally normal.

I have a light brahma rooster that feathered backwards for lack of a better explanation. From the time he was a chick he was just chick fuzzy. Never bald but no big bird feathers. At 3 months he finally started getting big boy feathers but they are still not all in. What is there looks normal and the rest still looks chick fuzzy. I never had a chicken do that but someone told me that the males of that breed will do that sometimes. Not sure if I totally believe that or not because I have raised them before. I named him HotWing because you can see the tips of his wings because no feathers. Just fuzz. Healthy bird just ugly as a monkey's butt.

Anyone in the Phoenix area have fertile eggs?

I'm not going to have any shipped, but I have a hen that just went broody. (that CA white that had feathers on it's leg that I got from you Vanessa)

I tried to break her earlier in the week, but at present she's warming a golf ball.

I'd love to put 6 to 8 fertile eggs under her.... and don't tell my wife!!!

That pretty much describes about 60% of my flock. I sold some beautiful 16 week olds the other day and I was ashamed to let the buyers see the parents. The GLWs seem to look the worst, followed by the Orpingtons and SLWs. My banties have perfect feathers.

We have been lurking for a while and finally signed up.
We are in the valley, toward the East side of Mesa but a fair ways from AJ.
Can anyone point to information about what is allowed in this town? Or are is it necessary to joing the chicken underground movement?

Sure is lots of interesting information here.

I still don't know why that bird had feathers on it's legs but now I have put the screen name to a face. Thanks!!! I wish I had fertile eggs to give ya. Are her eggs white or brown? If they are brown then she can't be a california white. Have you decided what she is?

Edit to say she came from an assortment package from Ideal.
