Arizona Chickens

Any AZ chicken people out there? I am looking for some advice on raising chicks in the desert. I'm in Mesa. Does it get too hot out here? I have four 20 day old chicks, 3 Buff Orps and 1 leghorn. Do we need to do anything special here
Hi I live in Phoenix and I keep misters on them part of the day. However I also keep dishes of water and Frozen milk gallons of water out for them to lay by.

So i split the calcium pill and put PB on it for Elsa... how did this chicken manage to LICK THE PB OFF? So yea, pill is still sitting there 😂 I'll smash one up and put it in food tomorrow. This girl...

I used to have a problem with getting my dog Buster to take his allergy med, so I now have it in a capsule form so that I can snip on end of it, and mix it in a raw egg or anything else that is moist enough.

Hopefully i don't have to mess with it for too long. She's just a new layer and not figuring stuff out. There's plenty of oyster shell and calcium available.. she just doesn't want to try it out.

Finally picked up the calcium citrate for Elsa.. going to split it in half and put some peanut butter on it for her.. hopefully that will help w her soft eggs. She is not really interested in the free calcium yet.. it doesn't look like a mealworm. 🤷‍♀️
Consider what worked for me.
Quite many years ago, I got chickens from the butcher shop. (brought them home live to keep, not eat. It seemed that they would catch some cooties there and needed help. Similar to dogs catching Kennel Cough.
I figured I try what I had on hand, as good nutrition would possibly help.
I took a bag of Ramen noodles, crushed them before cooking. I used slightly less water to make a thicker entree. Into that, I took 1/2 of a One-A-Day people vitamin without iron, and crushed to powder, and added. The chickens wolfed it down like crazy. That helped my chickens, and when their symptoms cleared up, I discontinued doing it. (2 or 3 days) :thumbsup
You can do something similar with the Calcium Citrate :idunno All my chickens just LUV noodles/pasta.

That's a great idea! She will go crazy for the noodles.. im thinking the same, her body just needs to catch up to the eggs , so she needs s few days of intense supplementation. Maybe that will get her craving the calcium. I'll try it this morning!

AAAAGGGHH!

Yesterday I noticed that the new Little Giant egg turner that I bought last fall for the swap meet eggs did not seem to be moving. Since it moves really slowly, I kept an eye on it. It's not turning. I took the eggs out and checked everything. It's set up right, and I didn't get any water on the moving parts. So now I have eggs that may not have been turned since Sunday. They were moved just a few minutes ago when I took them out to check the setup. When TSC opens, I'll call them and see if the turner can be exchanged. I made a thread on this in the hatching section asking for ideas/recommendations for a better setup. It should not have failed with only a few weeks total use. /end rant.

Update/edit: I shook it, and it seems to have started up. Not using this equipment again.

The American Beauty pasta was in the Fry's flyer this week in the buy 10 and save section for 49 cents each, so I bought 10 of them. Can't have too many spaghetti noodle's, right?
