I am in Tucson. We just became chicken owners in November for my son's 4-H project. So, we haven't had to deal with summer yet, but I worry about how the heat will affect them.

I've heard a lot of people put frozen water bottles out so the chickens can lay against them when they get hot. So, I am planning on giving that a try, as well as, lots of water.

I've also heard that a lot of people put a box fan in the coop to get some air moving. I like the water sprinkler idea, I will have to consider that.

If you come up with any other ideas that work, be sure to let everyone in Arizona know. I've kinda grown fond of these little feathered friends of ours, and would hate to lose any of them.

A block of ice works well. They’llstand on it and sip the puddles. I used a cut down kiddie pool, my flock loved it
 
Hey everyone!!
I want to change the inside of our chicken coop (coop only not run) to sand. I’m having a hard time figuring out which sand to use. I see a lot of people using the Sakrete Multipurpose sand from Home Depot without issues, even the company states its safe for coop use. It’s washed and sifted.
Does anyone know if this sand is in fact ok to use inside the coop or somewhere that will sell me the amount I need without a minimum or delivery requirement?
I live in Central Phoenix but will drive within the valley to get it.

I just buy the bags at the store in the garden department.. its only about $2 per bag, and yes, it's safe.

Sometime last week, I asked a similar question in this thread. People suggested play sand and the construction sand. I'd just be careful that if the sand compacts when wet, large amounts might cause a problem in the birds' crops. I've ordered both play sand and the construction sand for curbside pickup. I'm getting 4, 50 lb bags, just for a dust bath. I suppose you could use curbside pickup and get just small amounts, or bite the bullet and get a bunch from a sand/gravel company. The latter, might be cheaper, depending on the size of the coop. Good luck!

When I ordered the decomposed granite it was around $150.00 delivered. Granite is what they sell in little bags at the store for grit, I used it for my flagstone patio. I still have a bunch left, it is good for filling holes that chickens make, then they dig it out again!
