Arizona Chickens

ArizonaNessa...I'm wondering the same thing! Hopefully someone has an idea here.

Here's my question: Does anyone know of a meat processor in the Phoenix area that will do chickens and turkeys? I'm so mad...I found out that in the town of Gilbert, I can't butcher anything. Not even my own birds for my own consumption!!! What the heck?

phoenixmama ~ I do not know of anywhere that processes the birds here but I will say this.....what folks don't know won't hurt them. Unless you are building some sort of wild meth lab, I say go out and live your lifestyle the way you want but put a tarp or tent first and butcher away!!! There are too many people in this world with elongated nose disease.

I am going to sit quietly and wait for someone to have a fit over me saying that but oh well. I would rather feed my child good wholesome food WITHOUT chemicals and hormones.

ArizonaNessa...

I'm not going to have a fit over what you said. It's so irritating that I want to live a self-reliant life and feed my children wholesome, home grown food...but because of other peoples backwards sensibilities I can't! I can understand if the town doesn't want some huge slaughterhouse doing business...but just lowly me that wants to process my own food? Give. Me. A. Break.

Oh no I was not meaning that you were going to throw a fit but I assumed that there would be someone out there somewhere that would read what I posted and want to start an argument over my opinion.

I still say as long as you don't live in a third floor apartment sharing a balcony with a family of small children then just go to a place where folks can't see what you are doing and process your birds. You don't have to tell anyone that you did it. You are not selling the meat or processing for others or butchering 1000 birds at a time (I assume) or torturing these animals.

If done properly it won't even cause any noise. Now if you do live in a third floor apartment and those little kids are going to be looking out the arcadia door saying, "Mommy, what is that person doing?" then I would suggest that you not create live fear factor on your balcony.

This is even going to sound strange but I have never been to Gilbert I don't think but my hubby has lived here all his life and he says that Gilbert is a farming community. For the love of all things good in life why won't people that don't want to live a farming life stay away from farming communities? Those people should choose a home that suits their needs better. Maybe one of those houses that you can sit on the toilet and reach out the window and ask your neighbor for paper would fit their life a little better. (No offense intended to people who live in cookie cutter houses)

That's what's so crazy! Gilbert is a farming community! One of the reasons we wanted to live here was that there are lax restrictions on poultry and livestock. I guess you can have them...just can't process them! We didn't want to live in a cookie cutter house with snooty neighbors. I live in a quiet neighborhood at the end of a dead end street and my yard is just shy of an acre...so I certainly could be incognito about it. It's still frustrating, ya know? It's my house darn it...I should be able to butcher one of my own chickens if I want!

Hi
Here in the Snowflake-Taylor area, some poultry folks told me they purchase ground corn from a local big dairy farm... using their own 55 gallon barrel. Find mills where grain and corn is processed.... not just retail feed stores.
Or.. buy land with grass and a water source, improve it and free-range those critters!

Thanks snowflake. I never thought of a dairy or anything. I never feed my chickens cracked corn though but you have got my brain awake now. I am not between a rock and a hard place yet as far as buying feed but I was trying to help my pocketbook a little. I would be willing to buy like 5 pallets of feed at a time if I could get a super great price but the feed stores don't seem to want to cut me a good enough break to place a huge order with them. I don't expect them to give it to me for 50 cents a bag or anything but they gotta be able to do better than a one dollar break

Phoenixmama~~ I think the co-op thing is a great idea. I don't know that I have that much to contribute but I am sure that you will get responses because everyone seems to be trying to become more self sufficient these days. You are not the first person I have encountered lately that is looking for this same thing. I don't raise meat chickens because I can't actually slaughter them myself. Anytime in the past that we have processed I go out for the day with my son and hubby does it. I know that might sound bad but I just can't end their lives. I don't knock anyone else that has the intestinal fortitude to do it though. I hope everything works out for you.

Rooster attacked a hen. Dangit!!!! She has a really big gash on the back of her neck. We're talking like a square inch or so of missing skin. It isn't bleeding but looks nasty. I just put some iodine on it as I separated her from everyone. She's drinking plenty of water and eating so I think she may be ok if I can keep it from getting infected, right? Is there anything elkse I should do?

I don't know off hand, but I'd suggest posting on the emergencies thread. I know I've read about similar things happening and what to do. Good luck!
