Arizona Chickens

BellLisamo,
Thanks for the little Silver Phoenix!
There was some consternation over whether it was a hen or a roo when I left. Pat seems to think it could go either way.
My husband fell in love and we are calling it Phoenee (Feenee). I'll keep you updated and send pics as I have them.

Thanks again!

Cute name! Hey im positive its a rooster. I have a hen and the hens have different coloring than the roos.

If you scroll down to "Mr. & Mrs. Arizona," a young pair of Silver Phoenix" you'll see the difference.

Well, an exhaustive search of the internet leads me to believe that poultry processors have pretty much been put out of business by state inspections.

While I cannot find an active poultry processor, I can find lots of references to the prosecution of former processors. Do we dare kill a chicken?

I did get some of the byc cards and they are very nice. Well worth 4 dollars. Only took a couple of days for them to arrive too.

THE LAW SEZ YOU CAN KILL YOUR OWN STOCK IF HUMANE RULES ARE FOLLOWED. ....so, maybe it comes back to self-sufficiency, animal husbandry & personal responsibility?
butchering regulations and heavy fines are not so much about whether to kill chickens as HOW humanely butchering is done and whether hygiene and food safety handling codes are followed by the processors. In so many past cases, the scenarios were pretty dang ghastly.... and filthy. not a good thing....

I'm in Yuma where 120 in August is standard. We've never had to do anything at all special for the chickens except make sure they have shade and water. Like the earlier post said, miss one day of watering, you're out of the chicken business.

Tractors can not be kept in the Arizona sun during summer, even with water. Keep them under a tree. I just lost three chickens when their shade moved with the sun. We had them under a big tree, but when the sun moves, the shade disappeared. We had one of those plastic net-like shades on the tractor, and they were out of the tree shade for less than three hours. That was enough to kill them. When I ran over there and started pulling them out, I was surprised at how incredibly hot it was right there. They had tried to cope with the heat by drinking every drop of water they had. It wasn't enough. I will never make that mistake again.

Hey BellLisamo,

Have you ever given this little phoenix any treats? He doesn't seem like a treats guy. Won't go after scratch and hardly touched any of the grapes I was just trying to give him.

Is he just sad because his mommy sent him away?

I just found my first egg today, It is so cute and small, not sure who layed it, must be one of my RIR as the egg is brown. The waiting is over at last. I hope they will all start laying soon. I gave them some grapes and a box of meal worms for a treat.
