awwww. no, sadly my chicks that age never got treats. Only the biguns. he'll learn to love them im sure. is he still mr.gentle? do you have him in a coop with anyone else? im so glad your gonna keep me updated! upload some pictures for everyone to see! hes so sweet. looks like i let the sweeter of the 2 roos go....

Ah, well, I introduced him to yogurt today. I put a little on his beak and he licked it up a bit, but still won't come for scratch or anything. He's still super gentle and by himself. I pick him up in the morning and we go check on everyone else together.

I suppose he could use a lady friend.

After a couple of weeks when he knows where his home is I'll let him out to free range with the others and see how he does. Supervised of course!

I'll get some pics soon to show everyone!

I think that using extra roosters for food is OK, I would rather eat mine than the ones in the store, that way I know if they are healthy, and what kind of food that they have had. Im sure that there are folks out there who don't agree.

My crackberry is stupid! I can't seem to get a reply in the right spot when I'm using it.

Ok, I only have a couple of pics just yet and they aren't very good. He moves quickly and he's hard to get a pic of!

Hey Folks!

Happy Independence Day! I have another question for you experts out there. I have a Jersey Giant that is about 7 weeks old and has started to limp due to an apparent right foot/leg injury. I have thoroughly examined the foot and leg and can not see any external injuries. I'm wondering what advice you would have for me to help this little girl and her injury get better. She can walk/run when necessary, but over the past couple of days she has been doing a whole lot of sitting. We have 3 other little girls that she tries to keep up with but have decided to pen them for in hopes that our Giant won't have to move around too much. As always, any tips or advice will be greatly appreciated!

I guess while I'm at it, I'd also be interested to hear any advice on whether or not our 4 girls (7 weeks) will be alright moving full time out to the coop. We've been bringing them in between 1-4 PM as well as at night. Thanks again.

Harry

Hello to all. I'm brand new on here and just building a coop to get our first chickens. I'm in Tucson and wanted to find out if anyone has good recommendations of which kind of chickens do well in our climate and where you might recommend I get them. I have been browsing the hatchery websites but I only want to start with 4 or 5 birds, preferably pullets instead of chicks. Any advice you can give to this newbie would be much appreciated!

WELCOME TO BYC!

Leghorns, Minorcas, Anconas... all do well in the heat. White Leghorns don't eat so much either!

Heavy breeds, not so well. I lost a Rhode Island Red (RIR) and a Partridge Rock (PR) last week to heat stroke.

Hi and Welcome!
I'm in Sahuarita and plenty of other folks here are local. It would be easy for you to get some birds from someone local.
Do you want chicks or full grown hens? Do you want them for eggs or for show or for meat? Or pets?
Check craigslist and ask around on here. Most of the birds do just fine here.
I know someone up in Marana who has baby chicks for $1.50 each. Orpingtons, cochins, white rocks, and turkens. All are fine for this area.

yay!
I think mine is a little younger, right? He's just starting to get his big boy feathers in his tail. Just starting to come in shiny and green.

I got 2 little white midget turkey babies at the St. David farmers market on saturday!!!
