I hope so. The differential grasshopper destroys alfalfa crops. Last year in black canyon city, a blister beetle, which also destroys alfalfa crops, ate all the leaves on my palo verde trees--twice. So I hope that if this is the differential grasshopper, that it doesn't eat any palo verde trees up here. I do have carbaryl and some other pesticides, including permethrin 10.

That Permethrin 10 will kill any insect.

I had to break up a head of lettuce earlier this afternoon, so the chicken's got the 2 outer leaves and those harder pieces broken up, plus a couple broken up slices of bread for a treat.

It does seem like a lot of work, I'm assuming the person had the scrap wood and the expensive carving tools though. I think ping pong balls might work too, anything roundish. That is, if one wanted to be sure the nest box was suitable to the birds.

Grasshopper Update:
So far I've had 3 of the grasshoppers total (that I've seen), and my chickens ate them all. A fourth was seen on my neighbor's wall, plus one in the front yard that I lost sight of because it was the first one. But I went a few miles away, and at the interchange at Cordes Lakes/I-17, I saw at least 6 of them, just while I was driving! I'd say there must be a swarm of them coming. I'm going to keep checking the trees often and I do have the insecticide handy. One of them did eat some bites off the leaves of my sage plant, on the patio.

2 out of the 4 last Naked Neck pullet's that my next door neighbor's got from me a couple of month's ago have now started laying, one egg yesterday, and 1 egg today. That should help to keep them in egg supply for her holiday cookie baking.

Nothing like using fresh eggs for your baking! She'll love that.

The rain is coming down in sheets right now.

I got some of those fly bags that some of you mentioned and put them up near the coops last night. So far they seem to be helping.

I found a baby tarantula walking across my porch.View attachment 2814130

There was one just like this one in my yard after the rain this evening. It must have been just a baby, only about 2 1/2 inches long.
