Arizona Chickens

Howdy all you fellow Arizonans. If anyone is looking to rehome a chicken or two, I am in the market. I just lost two birds to coyotes, if you read my latest post. I have help coming this week to finish a new secure coop and run with plenty of room for hens to roam freely with no worries. I had chickens for years and won’t let a few predators deter me. I live in Tucson on the NW side of town which is new to me. Its beautiful but comes with its challenges.

Yesterday after chicken wrangling, I took a really nice photo of one of my hens and entered it in the contest here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/th...s-2-21-w-prizes.1509659/page-34#post-25397186

This is one of the birds that the chicken show guy sold me because they had some white spots. After a few molts the white is no longer on two of them. I'm guessing if he saw her, he'd be unhappy about selling her. :)
I already went there and liked your photo for it.

I have 6 that just started laying egg's the past couple of month's or so that I want to sell. I will let them go for $10.00 each. All 6 of them were hatched right here at my place last year. 3 of them are Lakeshore Egger's and one of them is laying green egg's. 1 of them is a very pretty colored Aloha that lay's light tan egg's. The last 2 are Naked Neck's. All 6 girl's are healthy and happy, but are getting a bit of wear on the back from the rooster affection's.

The reason why I am letting them go so cheap, is because I want to start breeding only the Bielefelder's.

Hello and welcome to the thread! Yesterday I rehomed 4 chickens but don't have any more I'd like to rehome, unless you'd like a beautiful but cranky cockerel? I'm in the central part of the state, walking distance to the Navajo/Apache county line. It's a long drive from Tucson.

I take it that you don't have a run attached to your coop then? Watch out for the wild bird's, as I have heard that the avian bird flue is spreading in the US.
It's an integrated secure run/roost setup. 150 sq ft including 10 ft roost space. It's all covered, and the roost and run have wind breaks. Yeah, I've been lucky with the wild birds--none have been seen in the yard lately, much less in the run/coop. Chicken food has been lasting forever!

We used to live in that area, and a friend lived there for even longer, in the dirt road 1-2 acre parcels. He saw a bobcat the size of a golden retriever stalking a 12-yr old girl, and discovered he himself (a 250-lb man) was being eyed one evening getting out of his car, by a bunch of coyotes! this was several years ago.

Yikes!

Hello, I’ve been looking at moving to Arizona after I leave college and I was wanting to start a ranch out there with chickens and ratites. I was wondering, what would be a good way to manage overheating in the desert? I’ve heard dugout and adobe buildings are an option, is this true? I’m looking at places in West/Southwest Arizona. Ijust need some tips, thank you!

It’s more of an issue with chickens than the ostriches/emus since chickens are more prone to overheating, but if there are any people experienced with ratites, I’d take advice on them as well.

Thank you!

Lot's of shade for them to get out of the direct sun, and lot's of clean fresh water. I also put up a misting system that they can go under if they want to, and water pan's that they can stand in. I can't tell you about ostriches/emus, because I don't have any of those.
