Arizona Chickens

Welcome to all newbies in AZ!

Thanks to AZNessa, Eggs4Sale and AZKat for the awesome help!

On the corner of my picture the black thing is a compost can and it would be moved if I put the chickens there.
I didn't know about Oleander being harmful to chickens, thank you so much!
My husband said he doesn't like the idea of having a stationary place for the chickens, he prefers to build us a tractor (hey, free labor I won't turn down!) so we can move them around and to the grassy side of the yard.
I live in Gilbert, AZKat, in a gated community (the egg bribery may come in handy in case I adopt noisy girls!) and I was not able to find any websites regarding the specific laws for raising byc. Any ideas?

Hello fellow Arizonans........Hope everyones managing okay in this incredible heat! Not sure what it is in Phoenix or other areas today, but it's 116* here in the Verde Valley right now.

I also wanted to let you all know that I've got a young (7 months) EE roo who needs a new flock to guard. He's the third roo among 30 hens and it's just not working great for them.

Here's a link to the thread I started for Taz.

He's really a gorgeous guy and definitely likes his girls. He's my 12 y/o dd's and she would like to get $15 obo for him. I've got a friend more than willing to send him to freezer camp, but we don't want that for him. He deserves a chance at flock roo.

From the city of Gilbert's FAQ
http://www.ci.gilbert.az.us/code/faqmunicode.cfm

FOWL AND RODENTS: The Town of Gilbert Municipal Code (Chapter 6) defines chickens, ducks, turkeys, pigeons and peacocks to be fowl. "Rodent" shall mean all members of the order rodentia, which includes rabbits and hares.

MINIMUM AREA (FOWL AND RODENTS): On each lot up to 12,000 sq ft any combination of up to 25 fowl and rodents are permitted. For each additional 20,000 sq ft, you are allowed a further 25.

The actual municipal code is found here:
http://www.municode.com/resources/gateway.asp?pid=12036&sid=3

You'll wan to read it yourself, but it sounds like as long as you keep the coop clean and unstinky keeping chickens is just fine. Of course, that assumes that you don't have an HoA with additional restrictions.

I noticed your entry this am. I have a portable coop. Got it by mail from McMurry's on line. Did not like it at first because it was a little cheaply made but once I reinforced the corners with brackets it is great. I move it about every two weeks. Is light weight. I usually position it on the weeds and when I move it the grass grows in nice. It is called the henhut and has no bottom so they are automatically free range. I only have 3 pullets but it is easily expanded for more. the Idea you have for 'on wheels' sounds good.

Any rabbit people here? Rabbits and hares are members of the order Lagomorpha, not Rodentia - not that this would impact the town's treatment of them.

Thanks AZKat. I read your links and also found my specific HOA regulations. It turns out I can have my chickys after all (yay!!).
I have a lake on my backyard and there are dozens of ducks and geese that often come eat my grass, so I figured my chickens will be in good company.

Yes DM, portable coops are all the rage! I researched several and since i am keeping a very small flock, figured this one would be the best bet for us .
Does anyone here have one of these?

One of these days I'm actually going to be a contributor to this forum and quit asking all of you experts for new advice and help. This time its the homemade waterer that I'm trying to make. I used the learning center as a starting point:

https://www.backyardchickens.com/LC-waterer.html

So I went down to my local Home Depot (Power/Germann) and got all the parts I needed (side note - Jeff in hardware was the absolute bomb!!! Best customer service I've EVER had at Home Depot!!!) Rather than drilling holes all around the bucket (like the picture shows), I drilled 2 small 1/4 inch holes in the bottom of the bucket, as I was trying to make it more like the litte 8 oz. chick waterer I used when the girls were just little. Once the whole thing was assembled I went for the trial run. It didn't really work like I had anticipated. The water just kept flowing and flowing and flowing and...well you get the point. The water flowed constatly until the water level on the inside of the bucket was lower than the holes that had been drilled in the bucket. So my question to all of you EXPERTS is ***What am I doing wrong?***

I should mention that I would also like to make this waterer a hanging waterer so as to try and keep the water fresh and clean throughout the day. Nevertheless, either hanging in the air or on the ground the water just flows out until the water level is below the drilled holes on the inside. I think the holes may be too high, but they are pretty close to the very bottom. Anyhow, any help or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

PS - The feeder works great! I got everything at Home Depot for a total cost of around $30 including 10' of chain to hang from the coop roof.

What is the difference between Hereford and Fort Huachuca?
