Arizona Chickens

Is the feed bucket contraption where they stick thier head into the bucket thru sort of a pipe?
Yes, it's a pvc one. I bought the kit's on Amazon. I already had 2 of the white food grade bucket's here in the house that I had stored chick feed in, so I just had my hubby drill the hole's in the bucket according to the instructions. He only put 3 holes in one of the bucket's so that I could set it up against the side of the run and any rain would not be able to get into the holes. It's sitting up on a cement block to keep it off the ground. They have done really well with it. They don't fight over it and take their turn's. Once filled up, it last's them for several day's.

Edited to add that the reason why I used the white bucket's is because I can see the level of feed in the bucket's.

Speaking of the feeder system reminds me also of the quail cups as waterers for chickens. I believe @igorsMistress uses them. I got some for my hens as well. Anyone else?

I have yet to figure out a convenient way to swish out the dust/dirt that settles at the bottom. Was wondering if anyone else uses these/has this issue?

I have a set and a bucket but haven't put them together yet.

I use a small rag and just swish it out, let it refill, and hang the rag to dry :)

I just rinse them with the hose when I give fresh water daily and use a rag once a week to wipe them out.

I tried a hose the 1st time but since the run floor is just dirt, it made it more muddy than I'd like. A rag makes sense. I've been getting dirt up in the exit point that's harder to get out.
Other than that, I do really like them for convenience!

Hi, We got our 7 chicks from Meyers hatchery on Tues. First time chicken owners. They are all doing great except 1. I cannot seem to stop pasty butt on one of the chicks. I've cleaned it 3 times and woke up this morning to it again. What am I doing wrong? It hurts the poor thing now because I've had to wipe her so much. I'm REALLY gentle but she is still sore. Can I put anything on her vent to help soothe her sensitive skin? What can I do to stop the pasty butt? Thanks!

You do have to be very careful with their tender little bottoms. Are you soaking her before removing the poop? If not, you run the risk of tearing their delicate skin. Also, I wouldn't worry about it being pristine. As long as the vent is clear and the other chicks aren't pecking at it, it's not a huge problem.

I've read around here that probiotics can help. So, yogurt (live cultures), fermented feed, supplements for example.

Welcome to the thread. 😁

Is plain Greek yogurt ok? They are only 6 days old. Is it OK to give to chicks that young?
