Arizona Chickens

I think so too, and I am very happy that you want to try to work that project! This mean's that you will have to hatch chick's though to get it going. I hope that I live long enough to see it, as I'm getting old. :old
If we've learned nothing else (especially over the last couple years) we have learned not one of us is promised tomorrow.

I'll be hatching some over the winter since I'm actively working on greenhouse pens for chicks to grow out there now (it needs to cool down a little during day before I can move this batch out there).

Probably hatching cross of Bielefelder roo and Red NN gal from you next to see what I get. The NN and Aloha have started to give me 1-2 eggs daily I think (cream brown eggs). I need to write out a real project plan for all this so I don't get sidetracked just hatching randomly!

You are right about none of us knowing for sure if we will still be here tomorrow or not. We can only hope that we will be.

Yes, I am also waiting for the cool down a bit to move these 2 pullet chick's that I kept out there to the grow out pen. I kept these 2 to replace the 2 hen's that you have up there now. Hopefully that will begin to happen before the next batch of hatching egg's hatch and I will need the brooder for them.

Yes, and both of those hen's lay a different shade of coloring of them, so if you notice that shading of color you will know what hen layed what egg.

We have a very large homemade tote brooder. The chicks are getting to where they can fly a little. The brooder isn't tall enough to let them actually fly. What do you do when brooding your chicks to let them fly a bit? I feel bad they are running around flapping their new wings but no room to fly up. Any ideas?
I've used various brooders, from a stock tank similar in concept to your large tote, to outside, to a 30" x 48 " by about 32 tall wire pet crate. I'd put a piece of hardware cloth or other very breathable screen on top to make sure the babies couldn't fly out of the tote and get trapped outside of it with no food, heat, water etc. Mine haven't really flown so much, just fluttered a bit within the brooder. As they mature they need more space. Also, if you give them more than the bare minimum space, it's easier to clean up after them and they get more space to try flying.

Well I have to just use a large dog crate tomorrow since I have a meeting off the farm. A couple of my chicks started flying and roosting on the edge of the big tote this morning so I was out late this evening cleaning the dog crate.

Then I'll get back in the afternoon and find some hardware cloth to make a lid - sometimes I have used some snow fencing with some bungees thru it onto the edge or an expandable (old fashioned child dangerous) baby gate on top.

Hey @CaroleW I just made a lazy river for the girls. It's barely a trickle right now but they already love it.
Make sure you dredge it every once in a while - it could possibly get algae if its too shallow and mucky and holding stagnate water.

I was going to get a little solar fountain to move some of the sitting water in a deeper area but haven't yet and it was dried up anyway.

Oh good point. I'll keep an eye on it and see what it ends up doing. I spent most of the day just getting it to work at all! For now, it's just runoff from the evap cooler which is off at night. We shall see... But I did not expect so much interest from the girls in what is basically just a muddy spot so far. 😂

If it is one of those wire dog crates, you can slip a board through the wiring of it to give them a place to roost like I did for my grow-out's.
