Arizona Chickens

Just drove through quite the downpour on the I-10. Could barely see! Lightening flashes lighting up the sky like a non-stop light show.
Just finished unloading the car and the lights went out. Just got the candles lit and the electric came back on. 😀 🤣

Looks like we're all getting plenty of rain around Phoenix.
Those storms rolled past us in waves all day. We were shopping in the AM and could hear the rain beating on the roof of the store. It stopped long enough for us to load groceries but poured on us as we drove home and unloaded. I’m thankful though, we need that rain!

I had a visitor out by the coop at about 4 pm today. I was in the house, and the chicken's started making a big racket. I went out there and seen that the visitor was a coopers hawk sitting on top of my feed can next to the coop that sit's on the pallet. It flew away when I seen it. All of the hen's were hiding in a corner where they couldn't be seen by the hawk. It was my rooster that had sounded the alarm and he stayed out in the pen at the end away from where the hen's were at in the coop. The hawk couldn't have gotten in there, but I praised my rooster and told him he was a good boy and did a good job.

Don't forget to give Hawkeye some EXTRA treats :old
Oh ,,,,, and hugs as well. :hugs
I gave a bit of 3 grain scratch, and made sure there was enough for him too as he's good about calling the girl's for treats and let's them eat before he does. The hawk didn't even show it's tail around here today. Maybe I sacred it too bad yesterday?

They're predicting the first snow of the season in the Pinetop-Lakeside area, this Sunday or Monday. 😳 Eeps. That was fast! Is everyone ready for winter up there?
I wouldn't doubt it, as it has gotten cooler, and the temp's have been dropping pretty good overnight. I've fed canned cat food mixed into wet feed for the next door neighbors flock that I have been taking care of while they went to Texas on vacation again. 2 of those Naked Neck hen's were in a hard molt, and I know they had to been cold overnight. They have a bit more feathering now then what they did.

I just got more heated dog bowls last week to avoid the rush and be ready for freeze. I don't think we'll get that cold here near Prescott yet even on Sunday when cold rolls in.

We use the heated dog bowls for the winter for the chickens if it gets that cold for a few months. They are only $30 each instead of $50+ for heated chicken waterers. I need 10 --
have 6 (last year for $20 each) and
bought 5 last week for $30 each.

I saw silicone heating pads online for metal chicken waterers 2 for ~$20, but I don't have metal waterers. I haven't tried these and wonder if it will hold up if mice are messing with the cord over winter.
