I don’t think I’ll ever take a chance with shipped eggs unless they are shipped fairly locally and don’t have to fly here. The success rate for hatching can be pretty terrible. I know Bluebaby has had a lot of experience with that as well. Makes for expensive birds.

I don’t like adding to my flock these days unless I get birds from my son, I’ve never had issues where eventually my whole flock gets sick by going that route. Otherwise, chicks from a hatchery will be it unless I let someone go broody.

I'm trying just to hatch my own for my NN/Bielefelder mix project starting this year and for the foreseeable future... also probably pure Barred Hollands and pure Bielefelders from my own flocks since both are auto-sexing. Not in the market for shipped hatching eggs.

WOW I didn't know Amazon had hatching egg sellers. I think the online sellers of hatching eggs are very brave to offer them. Seems like most sellers don't actually say NPIP or have to offer refunds like ebay or Amazon usually require of most sellers.

If you are in the market for hatching eggs I'd get them online before there is a crackdown for whatever reason. Otherwise you just have to drive to get them locally if available.

That's why I ordered more hatching egg's already. I'm just waiting for them to ship them to me. This will be the last shipped egg order that I get. That will give me enough in genes with these to get going good on them.

Have you ever noticed the roof of a rooster's mouth when he crows? It has a big crevice down the middle... you may have never seen it unless he's roosting above you so you could see. NOTE: Don't observe him up close unless you are protected behind chicken wire and he's -for sure- a nice roo. I assume hens have the same structure but haven't observed it.

I tried to get a pic but it doesn't show up or I don't get it at the right timing.

Yes, I have noticed it in the rooster's. There are a few neighbor's that have several rooster's around here, so sometimes Hawkeye feel's the need to join the chorus.

I have, but haven’t seen it in a hen. Of course they don’t stand there screaming at the top of their lungs like the roos lol.

Weed killer--- can it harm my chickens?

We've got weeds (of course) from all this rain. We used to use weed killer (way too much to pull by hand) but now that we have the chickens wandering around for an hour each evening, I'm concerned that using any would be bad for them.

Thoughts?

I'm not sure but if you plan to spray the weed's I wouldn't let them free-range. I don't free-range mine, but my hubby just sprayed the acreage of the weed's. He leaves the weed's close to the coop alone, and then I just get out there and use one of those stirrup hoes to get those out of there. I was pulling up weed's before to feed them, but not now since they have been sprayed.

Depends on what's in the weed killer. When I used to have an exterminator come regularly, he said to just keep the birds off it until it was dry. But for eating the eggs of the birds who'll eat weeds laced with pesticide---I had a situation where I told the weed guy to use organic---He DID NOT!! So the pesticide manufacturer (an engineer or chemist) said to be extra caution to keep them off the weeds for a month since I was eating their eggs.

Thanks. Yeah, you confirmed what I was thinking. @springvalley123 I was wondering how long I'd have to keep them off ... especially since we're eating their eggs. A whole month - wow. I better look into some other alternatives.

My husband was considering torching the weeds but that uses a bit of propane. Might need to reconsider that option after all. I can't imagine leaving the girls confined for a whole month.

Brand new to chicken owning, trying to figure out a coop for the babies in my house. I live in the Cottonwood/Camp Verde area. I need something for extreme heat and cold. I have 10 chickens, though 4 seem to be roosters and I'll probably give them away.

Any suggestions for size, venting, or weather proofing?
