Ruby has been fine all day, whatever was bothering her seems to have past. It may well have just been the heat.

We had a storm move through last night but didn't get much rain. I was hoping it would revitalize the pig weed that's all over the yard. The chickens love it. I've been gathering it and whatever other green stuff springs up after a rain and giving it to them.

I always feel a little bad they can't free range. I try to bring them stuff from the yard that they'd naturally forage on their own. It's all turning brown now but we're supposed to get more rain on Wednesday.

I'm glad your chicks are okay, igorsMistress! Did I miss you posting about them before? How many did you get? Do you have any pictures?

I’m so glad your girl is ok! Why can’t your flock free range?

I got three chicks. I was down to two hens and one 2 month old cockerel otherwise. The cockerel hatched from my crew and replaced his dad who is back at my son’s place. All chicks are blue, one Australorp and two silver laced blue Wyandottes. I usually let a broody hatch and raise the chicks, but it’s fun to do the raising sometimes.

We have too many predators to free range. Tons of hawks and we also have bobcats and there's a coyote "highway" nearby. We also have two-legged thieves. Crime has skyrocketed here. We have cameras and lights now but before we did stuff was stolen out of our yard several times.

I don't know. We have several locks on our coop, too. Thieves cut our chain link fence to get into our yard. They would leave little alcohol bottles on the ground and cigarillo butts on our window sills, isn't that creepy? That hasn't happened since we put up the lights and cameras.

We've had two more pink-brown Bielefelder eggs, both from Hope. Including today, that's 78 eggs since they started laying on July 29th. The largest was 64 grams - thank you, Miss Casey.

My roommate's brother just gave her his old(er) minivan and she gave him a dozen eggs in return - a good bargain. Now we have a second vehicle. I've been wanting to go camping for ages and now we have a vehicle big enough to do that. Looking at you, Chiricahua mountains in the fall!

The day before yesterday we had a big downpour. Not much wind but plenty of wet. That brought up the pigweed/amaranth in the yard again. It makes me wheeze but the chickens love that stuff.

.. Next time you hear a 2 legged intruder in yard at night, Have some Cherry bombs handy,, and lite,,, and throw out your window.
Next morning,,, be prepared with some Kitty litter to clean up the aftermath.
Night-vision cameras would also be good to have. This way the authorities may be able to catch the vagrants. Not holding breath that it would be a priority.
Cameras do make FANTASTIC deterrents.

My white leghorn aka Leggy has been noisy the last week and squatting and today she left me the first egg of my 8 ladies!!!! So exciting!!!

We collected seven eggs today, the most we've had in one day so far. That means half our flock has started laying! Two were Bielefelder pinks and Casey gave us her biggest egg yet at 66g and our first double yolk!

There's a nice rain coming down right now. Light but steady. Some rumbly thunder but almost no wind. Exactly the kind of rain we need.

Holy moly we had three double yolk eggs today: from Casey and Goldie (olive eggers) and Snow (white leghorn). Made some delicious breakfast burritos.

I was wondering... what happens if a double yolk egg is fertilized? Do you get twin chicks or does one just kind of get absorbed into the other?
