Arizona Chickens

Morning (almost afternoon) Pati! I am working from home today. Or trying...munchkins are CRANKY and want to smash the laptop. bashbashbashbash!

Still working on the home-depot bucket waterer. I think I have solved the air-pressure issue. But maybe not. I cannot test it out until cranky pants 1 & 2 go down for nap....

Just wondering - how many of you vaccinate your chicks for marek's disease or have any experience with marek's?

My local feed store (The Stock Shop) does not sell vaccinated chicks. I bought most of my chicks there and have a few that I hatched from purchased eggs, so none of my chickens are vaccinated. Didn't know if it was something I needed to do or if marek's isn't prevalent here.

I've never seen it mentioned in people's craislist ads and the guy at the feed store said he's never heard of people vaccinating their chicks after purchasing them, so I'm guessing the majority of the small flock owners here in the Phx area are not concerned about it - maybe we don't have marek's here in the city?

Wow! I didn't know it was so late. I got involved with my girls this morning. watching them running about in the yard. They sure make me laugh. It was no wonder I was so hungry. I made up a batch of Breakfast Burritos. They had red and yellow bell peppers, onions, potatoes, and a doz. of my wonderful Eggs. Jimmy Dean hot sausage. Mixed together, served on w/w torts. with green onion, tomatoes and Celintro Sharp cheddar cheese. You are good to go. Got to seal-a-meal most of them. I find I don't have to worry about having eggs any more. I live 60 miles round trip to the closest store. So always having fresh Eggs is a treat.

Still got'em! I'm going to be putting down a fresh layer of DE and pine shavings this weekend. Hopefully that will at least contain them if not eliminate them. Admittedly, I've been a little busy with work lately so I haven't been able to devote a whole lot of time to eliminating the cricket problem. Once the rains subside, I'm going to put a flood light out there to see if that can encourage my chicks to eat'em some bedtime snacks. Thanks for the concern and inquiry. I can't wait until we start getting us some fresh eggs! We're still about a month and a half away.

I minimally vaccinate everything. I think these kinds of diseases are only present in large flocks in poorly ventilated areas - disease can spread far and wide quickly in those types of enclosures. However, in a place like hickman's where their chickens live in cages all their lives and lay eggs onto a conveyor belt...they might vaccinate because the chickens are living in such close quarters.

I would also not want to eat eggs from vaccinated chickens for about a month. The virus in the vaccine can be shed and mutations can happen easily and without reason... certain strains of salmonella now have the ability to pass from chicken to the egg. This isn't common, but just an example.

I suppose I should also mention I believe VERY much in the body's ability to heal itself without toxic medicines.

Good Morning Arizona from Tucson> I just found out that the two Welsummer chicks that I have been raising are Roos! Does any body want them? Do you think I might be able to trade them for a EE hen?
Good Morning Arizona.

I am sorry they both turned out to be Roos. I wish I could have one. I have 2 Roos already, sharing 5 hens. Sigh! Maybe you can post on CL.

It is starting to thunder out here. I better go feed my kids.

Good Luck with the Roos.

I guess my chickens need more protein to stop eating feathers, so does anyone in Az know of a place to get meal worms? or any better ideas of what to feed to get them protein? I'm on the n/w

Good morning Arizona!!!! It is BEAUTIFUL outside today. I was actually cold when I fed the animals this morning! What a wonderful break from the heat!!!!! It is pouring here right now. I hope the rest of you are getting a nice break, too!

Bosque, where did you get your chicks from. I have a couple EE/Brown Leghorns that I may be able to trade you for, but I live in Casa Grande.

Have a wonderful day Arizonans
