Arizona Chickens

Thanks Rufus, I try to keep it on the down-low but we did try contacting the HOA with general questions regarding pets/animals and no response whatsoever....
I do miss Queen Creek and Casa Grande sometimes, there I had no worries on who was seeing what

Well, I for one am glad to live where I do on my nice little slice of earth. No worries at all about anyone ratting me out to the city. That's the nice thing about being so secluded. But, I do miss having neighbors!!!!!

On a totally off the subject side note... Tomorrow is my BIG day!!!!!!! I am officially turning 30 years old! I'm not quite sure how I feel about it yet. I will have to wait and see when I wake up. Hummm.... Wonder if I'll feel older?

Anyway, take care all you desert dwellers! Have a great night....

Good morning Arizona, Looks like we have another wonderful day going on.

I got the playhouse all scrubbed and put together. It is in great shape. It doesn't look like it was used very much. I will cut the hardware cloth for the two windows and get it installed. I want to inlarge my pen, I have been waiting for the weather to cool down before I tackle that job. Yea looks like I can start that project now. A little closer to getting the Cochin's.I think I will call the new coop The Cochin House. Anyhow the big plans for today.

I am so glad that I live in the Boonies also. Tonopah, as far as I know doesn't have a restriction. It is so peaceful out here and no street lights.

I just found out that one of our neighbors has a mex. food truck. He has it set up in Tonopah. OMG! I tried his food the other day. Wow! very yummy. So hard to find great mex. food around here. If anyone lives around exit 94, get off I-10 go south over the overpass. Boom, there he is, look on your right for the big white catering truck. Also Very clean. Early in the morning I could smell someone grilling. It was Ramero. Worth the stop.

I hope someone can help. My neighbor has a beautiful barred rock roo. He's hugh and very handsome but no girls. She would like about 6 laying hens to keep him company and for the eggs. She has a shop and doesn't have time to raise chicks. (not particular about breed but wants standard not bantams.)
I'm hoping someone in the Verde Valley area around Cottonwood and Camp Verde might have some for sale.

If you do please contact me by email.

Thanks
Jacie

Happy Birthday ChrystalGail. 30 is so young yet. Life does not begin until 40 and then you still are young, just dry between the Ears. Enjoy your day with gusto! I love birthdays, each year brings something new. Keep your mind young and you will always be young.

I only use my misters when it gets 110. I also have wading tubs for my flock. They love to stand in it. I have a camo net covering the top as well as shade cloth and there is a tree inside the pen. They have lots of shade and fresh water each day is a must.

All you desert folks, have a great and productive day. Doing nothing is good for your system also. Have at it!

Thank you all!!! So far it has been a great day! Not to mention a productive day. Laundry, dishes, feeding, cleaning, etc.... A mother's work is never done, not even on her birthday! HaHa! I love it though. No where else I would rather be than with my wonderful and adorable family.

Take care & have a wonderful weekend!

Hi Mahroni,
23 of the little EEs are doing great!

The weaker one died on its own the following day - it would drink when I dipped it's beak into sugar water, but I never could get it to eat - it wouldn't even open its eyes more than a second from the time we first took it out of the box.

The poor baby with the bad leg isn't doing well either. I was hoping it might have splayed leg, but I really think the leg is deformed (or was broken in transit). This chick has always had one perfectly good leg that was straight underneath it like the leg should be - I think splayed legs should have affected both legs. Even though I have taped the leg with the foot aimed in the right direction, the foot seems useless - it sticks out to the side and the little chick hobbles around using the wrong side of its foot. Her wings are not feathering out as fast as the others - even though it can get itself to feed & water, it sleeps more than the other chicks. When I took the band-aid off to attach a new one, the leg just stuck way out to the side again. I was hopeful in the beginning, but am not very optimistic about this chick anymore

These are pics of what it looks like with its band-aid on. Notice how it won't stand on the foot.

Well I have happy news that I want to share. I know it might not be much to some but it was huge for me. I have a LF buff cochin that has what I call chicken scoliosis for lack of a better term. From the time she was hatched she was bent in the middle. Her rear end just hangs a hard right. I thought of culling her for her own good but she would not give up. She grew and grew and held her own in the brooders. She had and still has a little limp from the offset but other than that she is good. I decided to keep her and just let her live her little life free in the yard with my other birds. I set her free and hubby said that she would probably die when she laid her first egg. I agreed but......GUESS WHAT!?! Her first egg came yesterday and she is still here happy and clucking away. Another egg today and still great

So there you have it. Sometimes you just shouldn't give up on them.

ArizonaDesertChicks~~ I hope your little baby pulls through. It's amazing what a little help will do for the little fellows. I had one some time back that had a foot like that. I showed it to Mahonri and he said I could try and brace it but the foot was completely upside down and I decided to help the little guy to the promised land instead. Raising chickens can have some really sad times.

DM~~ It was very nice to meet you today. I made a little note about the orpingtons for you.

Edited to say: since the buff cochin pulled through I decided to officially give her a name.....Butterscotch!

Nessa... Congratulations!!!

ADC... Nessa is right. I actually have a roo that is about 3 months old right now with the same problem as yours and he is doing just fine. He is actually being raised for meat (not sure how that will turn out) as was my intention with all the roos from that batch. He doesn't use that leg at all and his little foot is completely upside down. My reason for keeping him going was he was no trouble at all. He never had any issues with eating or drinking, so I just let him be and decided that when life became hard for him I would relieve his misery. But, to my surprise he is doing just fine. Other than looking quite odd, he lives a very normal life. So, this is a happy side to the same situation (except for the meat bird thing... LOL...)

Have a wonderful night everyone!
