We got 8 eggs on Friday... Now if the other 17 girls would just start laying.

Here is a pic of a roo I picked up at the feed store for free. (Feed Barn... 19th Ave & Adobe)

I am in love with him.

His crow is just cute... (hope the neighbors don't mind!)

He has mated with three of the hens so far...

I'm thinking of incubating... just waiting for my GC Maran to start laying so I can put her roo with her.

That roo is pretty, yet somehow odd looking. His face is face-like? Maybe I am crazy... what a great find!

Today my sick pullet looked better, so I let her out with the big kids for playtime. When I put her back away, she looked tired, and REALLY fought going back in the brooder. Unfortunately, she finally developed a new symptom: her comb/top of her nasal passages seem swollen. Crap. They were not swollen when I let her out.

SO, now everyone is on lockdown, blanket meds for all.

Thankfully no one else shows symptoms yet. I kinda wish I had blanket treated everyone last week, but am leery about using the "shotgun" approach for no reason. Oh well.

Hey, I'm in Yuma too.

What 4-H group is your daughter in? You need any help with 4-H here, you can always PM me. I have tons of contacts with local chicken breeders and 4-H leaders. A good 4-H club for poultry are the "Yuma Mesa Jackrabbits." The poultry leader is Dan Delarm, he's very smart and has tons of experience w/ poultry. I can PM you with the Club leader's #'s if you want to join.

We don't do ANY 4-h at this time, we are in the "Hey, it would be a good idea... stage". It would be great if you could get me in contact with the 4-H group. My kids really want to do that and it would be good for them to learn the responsibility.

If you could put me in contact with breeders, that would be good too. Main thing is that I want to start hatching eggs. Maybe that will help my daughter learn even more about poultry rearing.

You will learn so much from this site. Most of the people on BYC are very helpful when it comes to answering question.

I will be looking forward to reading your posts.

Budkingston -- Welcome to BYC!

Mahroni - very cute rooster - is he a polish?

Enjaytoo
- I saw that ad on craigslist too - I was surprised to see the feathers in pic #1 looking so much like regular chick feathers, but.... I'm no silkie expert.

We do have our first 3 silkie chicks right now that are almost 4 weeks old (1 buff & 2 black) because my 16 year old daughter fell in love with one of them at the feed store. Since they weren't sexed, I figured we better get 3 just to insure getting a female (watch them all be boys!). Their feathers are kind of stringy looking.

Lauree - Hope your pullet gets better soon - I'm sure it's stressful trying to figure out what's wrong and how to take care of it.

Well, he's the prettiest polish I've ever seen - I love blue chickens.

Enjay -- these are two of our little 4 week old silkies with their spiky feathers (the black one looks washed out because of the flash) - I'm thinking maybe the craigslist seller accidently posted the wrong photo? The chicks in the other two photos look like they could be silkies.

Just for fun - the one & only frizzle they had there - couldn't resist and now 3 weeks later, at almost 4 weeks old - look at her crazy feathers (at least I'm hoping it's a girl, so we can keep it).
