Arizona Chickens

Hi Brenda, Sorry to hear about your Aunt. Hope all goes well. Bless your kindness.

Do you know the sex of your Spotted Sussex and the Golden Wyandot yet? If they are pullets I would take those two. I just got six new babies, and they are just about the same age. So I am all set up to give them a good home. All of my chicks are spoiled, they get lots of good treats and the best care. Pm me is you want to. Lets talk.

Brenda- I am sorry to hear about your aunt! I hope she feels better.

I would offer to take a chick or two, but it looks like the ladies got to it first! Maybe Pati and I can arm wrestle for the SPotted Sussex and Wyandotte

Brenda, I'm soo sorry for your situation. You are doing such a wonderful thing for your aunt and I'm sure she is so grateful that she can count on you to help her when she doesn't have anyone else to turn to. You are an inspiration! I would be more than happy to take your babies for you. I have pleanty of room for all of them. In the future when you are ready for some more babies, just let me know and I will set you up with some. I'm here in Casa Grande, so not too far from Gilbert. Just let me know...

Take care and keep your head up!

edited to add: Sorry, didin't see everyone elses comments until now... I wasn't trying to take them out from under someone else. LOL... I just wasn't paying attention.

You are all in inspiration. What a great community we have going here.

Brenda, I admire you and appreciate your wonderful example. As for the rest of you, what a great thing to see everyone reaching out.

I got my first eggs from my younger flock a few days ago - not as exciting as the VERY first eggs, but still fun. I know the barred rock is laying and suspect the australorp is laying also (haven't seen her though), unless one of my easter eggers is laying brown eggs (hope not - my older 3 EEs all lay green or blue/green eggs).

Yesterday, I found 10 eggs from 12 laying hens/pullets (17 pullets total, but one hen is a slacker - hasn't laid for months and the 4 younger EEs haven't started yet).

CheerfulHeart - How old were your chickens when they started molting? Mine are all less than 1 year old (8 of them will be 1 this month) and haven't had a big molt yet.

I have six black australorps. They will be 1 year old this month. 3 of them were broody toward the end of the summer and we took our time getting around to "breaking" them. They went right into molt after that. They weren't "naked", but definitly scruffy. One of my BA's looks like she is part RIR, she started molting just this week. In the future, I will either get eggs/chicks for the broody ones or get serious about breaking them right away. Their combs were shrunken and pale when we finally got to it. I kept thinking they'd get over it on their own. Yes, I had to learn from my own experience that letting them brood is not in their best interest if their aren't little ones to raise up. FYI - we got our first egg at pretty close to 20 weeks from this bunch. Then a week's break, then a gradual build up to 36 eggs a week ... then they fell off due to heat/broody, etc.

whats the youngest your hens have gone broody cause mine are just about 7 and a half months old and im extremely anxious to let her hatch out some babies

I hope itll happen in the spring .. i have a BR, EE, BO and RIR .. hopefully one goes broody atleast !! haha

My two barnevelders, the only broodies I've had, went broody at about 6 months of age. One was a great broody and successfully hatched out her chickies and took good care of them - the other - not so good (accidently cracked or broke most of the eggs - big clutz).

There is supposed to eb a Poultry show in Tucson on Nov 28-29th or the 29-30th, depending on what news source you read. I am wondering if anyone has been to this in the past since it is a 4 hour drive for me. Is there an addmission fee for general viewers, if so, how much? Do people sell chickens there? Fancy breeds? baby chicks? Fertile eggs? Is this something that a 9 year old girl would like? Is anyone here going?

Here's the info from an earlier post. I may go the day after Thanksgiving. I also went to the state fair in phoenix. I enjoyed looking at the birds at the state fair. It was an easy drive from Mesa. However, I am not sure it would have warranted a 4 hour drive.
