Hello all and Happy New Year!!!

Sigh.......sob.......sob.......sigh........

It is with a heavy heart and much sadness that I come to you all for your help, one last time. Due to unforeseen circumstances we are going to have to have to look for a new home for our 4 beautiful girls. You all have been so willing to answer all of my questions on this forum I wanted to bring this request to you before I go out to the general public (i.e. craigslist). We have 2 New Hampshire Reds, a Delaware, and a Jersey Giant as well as a coop and all of the supplies related to the care of these beauties (i.e. feeder, waterer, buckets, food, scratch, oyster shells, etc.). These 4 have been together since they were born and were purchased from the Murray McMurray Hatchery. My kids are heartbroken, but due to the fact my wife and I are both in school and as well as my day job, we just don’t feel like we have enough time to allocate to taking care of our girls like they need and deserve.

We really don’t want to ask for any money in return so long as our girls go to a good home, but in case there’s somebody out therewith some cash to spare we would like to get $150 in return for the girls and all other things related to them noted above. But in the end, as long as they go to a good place we will be happy. All 4 were born May 15th and are all producing big, beautiful brown eggs on a very regular schedule. The girls free range from sun up to nearly sun down and are very docile and well behaved. They will let my kids pick them up at will and actually run up to you much like a dog when we go outside to be with them.

Thanks so much for your help in this request. I don’t know how to attach pictures so please email me and I will send them on over.

May each and every one of you have a very happy and prosperous 2010!!!

Hey all,
We live in Tempe just west of ASU (near Hardy). We don't have any chickens (we live in a townhouse with no yard) but if anybody close by would like a few egg cartons from our store eggs once in a while I would be glad to give them to you. We had chickens when we lived in KS and once I started giving eggs to friends and family it was a challenge to find egg cartons, so I just hate throwing things away that could be of use to somebody! I only have 2 empty cartons right now but we use at least a dozen eggs a week so if you're close I can save them and drop them off. Better than sending them to the landfill.

Maybe one day when things settle down for you, you can adopt some more chickie-babies.... I'm sure you'll find a great home for the girls

There were TWO green eggs in the Eggplant today!

I also managed to identify who my brown layer was: the unassuming Runt. She's my snuggle bunny chicken. I also think Slayer is one of my sneaky white layers (she's the rescued buff brahma) but she should lay brown eggs. I was REALLY confused today. I am actually a little concerned too. I hatched the remaining 2 eggs from the 5 I set. (3 of 5 hatched) They are supposed to be the Exchequer/Sussex crossed hens with Patchwork. But if those hens are laying sparadocally, and the sneaky layers are laying every once in a while, who knows what the chicks are!

Not that it matters. Patch was here to spread the love & increase the gene pool. I just didn't expect to be "there" yet.

Check out the crazy variations I got...

Update on the chicken situation:

After much conversation and a family counsel today with my wife and kids we have decided to make another attempt at raising chickens in the backyard. I am overwhelmed by the encouragement and support that many of you have provided to us. I apologize for getting the hopes up of those who expressed interest in raising our girls, please know that it was never my intent to mislead you or give you false hopes. My fingers are crossed and my hopes are high that will be a long-term endeavor, but in the end only time and effort will tell.  Thank you all, again, for your help, support, and understanding with this decision. Have a great week all!

Hi,

I'm new! Lot's of good info on the pages. Thanks for the tips. I'm trying to get up to speed.

We just got our chickens for the first time this September. We were told the hens we bought were good layers but they aren't. They stopped laying eggs in November about the time we added a rooster with them. Any one might know why our hens stopped laying? We are looking to buy some more egg layers. It kinda stinks to be raising chickens and not able to have any eggs...

and glad you decided to join us. Most likely your chickens are not laying because chickens molting season is in the fall. Egg production will slow if not stop altogether during this time. Don't fret they will begin again as the weather warms up and we get closer to spring. Another reason for egg production to stop is broodiness. If the birds are hiding in the nesting boxes and not coming out they are most likely broody. Which means they are trying to be mommies. They will do this even if there is nothing to hatch. It won't last long and you can either give them fertile eggs to hatch or kick them out of the boxes daily. The other common reason for egg production to slow or stop can be nutrition. If they are not getting a proper diet then they won't be laying at their best. They should be getting a steady diet of free fed lay crumbles or pellets as well as treats. You can find an excellent treat chart by following the link below.

https://www.backyardchickens.com/web/viewblog.php?id=2593-Treats_Chart

I have a personal preference not to feed cracked corn or scratch grains because it does not have much in the way of nutritional value and I choose to treat my birds with something more substantial. It does not mean that corn is a bad thing...it's just not my thing.
