Arizona Chickens

I would like to shade our fenced run with some sort of hedge, what would be ok to plant close to my coop and run without me having to worry about my girls eating some of it. With the constant heavy wind and electrical storms we have; I have realized that plants do much better then nailed in, screwed on, or bolted on shades we have used this whole last summer. And do Red Sex Links do well in the desert heat?... provided they'll have a cool place to live, fresh water and whatnot. Thanks!!

How about grape vines? They love our desert heat and I hope they're okay for the birds cuz my girls were pulling leaves off of mine.

That would give you great shade in the summer and plenty of sun in the winter months.

Red Sex Links do quite well here. I have found very few breeds that don't do well here given proper water, shade, housing and so on.

So I have been meaning to ask: how goes everyone's attempt to exercise while it is nice enough to venture outside?

I have been trying, but keep getting distracted by other things I don't do in the summer like baking bread, baking cookies, creating elaborate meals, making my butt bigger....

Although I have taken the kids outside to play EVERYDAY for at least 2 hours. The weekends rock because I can let the chooks out and random children show up to play and see the chickens. (well not TOTALLY random, I know who most of them are

) I also taught my 4 yr old how to "mop" by running through the house with wet towels on our feet. FYI: sopping wet bath sheet = major burn.

This last weekend I went to a b-day party at one of those bouncy worlds. Like always, the DH and I were the only ones PLAYING with the children--- I bounced the kids around, (literally) threw them up the climby mountain, did the obsticle course races, let 25 4-year-olds dog pile me---and that is hard work for a 5'10", 200 pound Polish chick with tiny feet. Sunday I got on the eliptical to TRY and workout, but bombed after 7 minutes. I was SO tired! And weird things hurt! Ankles, knees, shoulders, arches!

As I was gasping for air, it dawned on me why I was so tired--you know, besides the tubby thing. I am so dumb sometimes. So: do I give up and admit I am getting older, or enjoy running myself into the ground? The other parents at the bouncy place HAD to think the DH and I were nuts. They certainly took enough pictures.

That snail vine looks wonderful. Now are you all saying that the flowers and leaves are safe for them to eat. My chickens jump up for leaves and flowers. If it grows fast then it could shade by summer say May or June? It looks like it probably scales anything....great idea.
