Arizona Chickens

Mahonri - Today - just sticking around cleaning the house and coop AND keeping an eye on the incubator. I'm thrilled it has stabilized so well (at least so far). I was up till 3 in the morning making sure that the temps had stabilized before I went to bed last night. I have 3 themomters inside there (counting the acuraite with a separate probe as 2). I haven't had to adjust the dimmer since 1 or 2 last night and don't think I'll need to - The temps are 99, 99.9, & 100.2 and not changing - humidty is about 30%.

Pati - Congratulation on your new car - sounds fun! I like the last two lines you posted.

gckiddhouse - I bet Penny will be happy with the new flock. Since the new chickens will be so much younger, she'll be able to be one of the 2 head honchos.

Hope everyone has a great weekend, getting things done, superbowl, etc.

Great find - I was looking on craigslist for something really cheap to make an incubator out of, but never found anything (I was in hurry), so ended up making one out of an aquarium we already had in our shed.

I think MaryAnn should do a thread on her bator. Her dimmer switch is an ingenious thermostat!

I had a stranger show up at my door and bought 4 and a half dozen eggs. Cleaned me out!

I'm going to have to up the price.

This afternoon I start saving hatching eggs for one of our own here on Friday.

Hey Phoenix area folks, I was at The Stockshop at 67th Ave and Thunderbird yesterday and they are having a free poultry workshop on Feb 25th at 6:30 pm at their store. A rep for Purina will be there to talk about nutrition and there will be other subjects. Thought I would pass the word on to anyone who might be interested. There was a sign up sheet to make a reservation. Have a good rest of weekend.

Okay - I didn't start a thread, but posted my incubator info & pics here:

How much are you charging for your eggs? I sold 5 dozen last week (2 previous buyers purchased 2 dozen each & my husband's co-worker bought 1 dozen). I've been charging $3 per dozen.

MaryAnn... the lady asked me how much a dozen I told her $3 and she came back with 13 dollars and asked for 3 - 18 packs so I gave them to her. I just need to say $3.5 a dozen and $4.75 for an 18 carton. and leave it at that. If she shows up again next week, she may not be happy with the price increase but I have others asking for them now. Word gets around.

I love your pics of the set up. I think it's ingenious that you used the dimmer switch from Wal-mart as your thermostat... and you can see the maran egg and the two polish eggs in the back! Cool!

gckiddhouse... the polish laid after I sold all my eggs, so I saved her egg for you! I'll have your dozen plus six ready for you on Friday... Along with the birds you want.

Kat: I'm picking out your Wheaten roo for you for Friday... bring a box for transporting him.

I got a couple of e-mails on my craigslist add for my wheaten roos so hopefully I'll be done with those in a couple of weeks.

Wish I wouldn't wake up in the middle of the night out of a sound sleep. guess i should go out and see how much it has rained. I think Glendale got a bunch and those of us in the East part of the valley ... nothing.

I'm very impressed! I need to make a bator and have an empty ten gallon tank lying about ... I may try it in there now. I have just 2 comments/questions ... 1) The link you posted on your page that references the other person successful at a tank bator didn't take me there, and 2) where did you locate/afix your fan? I didn't see it in the pics so it must be over by the light but where? Anyways, great job! and good luck!

I am slow in waking up this morning...it started raining at about 7 pm and rained off and on all night. Ususally I love rain, but after that big rain and snow about two weeks ago. It is hard to sleep when you know that it can get cold enough for snow. We did get a half inch and it is still raining a bit. It is going to be a wet day again.

We have been having great looking clouds, they are fun to watch moving along the sky. I live on a mountian side so I can see really far away.

Ok, so I had plans to work outside today before heading to a birthday and superbowl party. Well, it has rained here since 2:00 am and my backyard looks like a pond. So, unless I get motivated and clean my house, I guess I have no choice than to get all my paperwork together for doing my taxes. That will take a few hours, I'm sure.

And, I am so excited! Since I am originally from Ohio, and they are known for their Buckeye trees (had one in our yard and stepped on their spikey shells with barefeet) I ordered some Buckeye chicks to be shipped in May.
I wanted to wait until after we came back from the Pima County Fair in April. The Buckeyes are on the endangered list, so hopefully, I can help keep these chickens going.

Anyway, have a great Sunday everyone!

Angie
